View Full Version : Building PC.....
Deleted old thread. Going to build new one. Which type should I get. Haven't kept up w/ hardware since my last one. I saw 939/940 and AM2. Staying w/AMD. Not sure what chipset or whatever you call to get. I'm thinking AM2.
I'm going w/ AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor 5600+ and one of the MSI mobo. Did some reading on tomshardware, pretty good site.
Got a ?. Right now I have 2 HD, one is for OS & software, other is for saving things to. Was using XP, but thinking of going to Vista. Will my 2nd HD come up normal as a storage device or will I have format for Vista. I have alot of stuff on 2nd HD.

Agreed. I used it for about a month before I was ready to throw it out the window.
Guess I haven't messed with it that much. Parents just got a PC w/Vista, and I thought it was alright. Had to get used to it though. I might just keep using XP.

MSI #1 (http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4864710?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG)
MSI #2 (http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5214367?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG)
One of the guys at Fry's pointed them to me. Will do some reading on the Asus unless you know a model I can look up.

I ran vista for a week before I went back.
Too buggy on hardware right now. My 7900GS drivers crashed lots and the SB Xfi support sucks.
I've got a 3600 x2 overclocked to 2.6ghz and I like it. Definately good bang for the buck.

I'd steer clear of buying from Fry's.
I'd get an ASUS mobo from Microcenter, or if they don't have the one you want, order it online. If you're not in a hurry, sit tight and look for sales. I saved a shitload by looking for sale items and rebates because I wasn't in a huge hurry.

Really? I ended up getting the Asus P5K Deluxe (Wi-Fi) over the nForce 680SLI at your brothers discretion. He said something about the maker of the board was hit and miss.
I wouldn't use MSI now if it was free. Fuckin' POS.
BTW, Fry's has the Asus P5K Deluxe on sale for $200. It's one of the best MoBo's on the market right now, and it's an overclocking sumbitch.

Probably gonna check out Microcenter. Never been there, just drove by. More than likely I'll hit up Fry's tomorrow. Gonna do a little more reading on the Asus. Will my Sata1 HD's work on these new boards that says Sata2, or it just depends if on board if it supports it or not. Boards I've been reading support Sata2. So I figure I can.

yeah stay clear of MSI, I've had lots of issues in the past with an AMD and INTEL setup. This was 3+ years ago, but I would stick with Abit, Asus etc.

I've got the ASUS P5W-DH Deluxe with a core 2 duo processor. I bought it from Fry's and had to RMA it for a replacement. The replacement I got works badass, but the one I bought from Fry's was faulty.

Asus mobo, AM2 socket with a high end non-FX would be advisable. Make sure to get a VERY stout PSU with high 12v rail amps because that is what the new G80 series vid cards require. as for memory, crucial, OCZ or patriot are all good brands. if you have dual HDDs you only need to format the one obviously, all the data on the second will be safe. please dont run RAID either. Vid cards i'd suggest EVGA or BFG. I personally have an EVGA and love it. I killed it by OC'ing the thing and not knowing that my PSU was marginally bad, but they still replaced it. Get some good cooling and you're set.
Up and running now. Didn't go all out on the Mobo. Not really into gaming on PC. So I bought what I would use. That deluxe looked nice, but overkill for me.
Mobo: Asus M2N-e
CPU: AMD DualCore 5600+
Vid: Geforce 7300 GT PCI-E
Ram: 2 gig Corsiar DDR2 800
Lot faster than my old one.
Little update on my old one.....Came to find out it WAS the pwr supply. It turned on, but I guess it didn't supply enough current to turn on system. Actually, took board to Fry's and we turned it on. So old system is good except pwr supply. All this after I already bought new stuff. :D
Will be putting it up in the For Sale section.
Oh yea, forgot to tell ya....the 2 HD's I was telling you about, well I mixed them up, and formatted wrong one.................When pwr supply started to act flaky, I went ahead and made a 2nd back up on DVD. Talk about a whole lot of pics I would of lost.
WORD OF ADVICE........MAKE A 2ND BACK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there a 3rd party fan I can get to replace the one on my vid card? Any recommendations?
Geforce 7300 GT PCI-E
Like to get my case close to quiet as possible. PC radiator not an option.
Not as loud as my old AGP vid card, but still louder than I want it.
