40-70 miles a week depending on where I'm at in my period training. At least one run a week in the 12-15 miles range.

This is also combined with 120-200 miles of biking and 15-18000 yards of swimming and 2x with weights.

I do maybe 6 miles a week, with my knee the way it is. And that is normally on a treadmill. When my knee was good and rugby was going on I was probably at 20 miles give or take. I have been riding my bike around 80 miles a week and once summer starts and school is over I plan on upping that.

I jogged a mile and a half for my personal fitness class a few weeks ago. Before that, I think I ran back in Spring 06.

I've been walking/jogging about 4-5 miles 4x week. I've been having a lot of trouble building endurance back up to actually RUNNING, and I don't know why.

I didnt run at this year tell now. I'll start at 1 mile tonight. :DI started recently too. I run to the end of my neighborhood and back for a total of 1.4 miles. Been doing that 3 times a week recently. First time took me about 30 minutes. I've got that down to 16 minutes now (still slow though).

That's next on my list. I've been looking at bikes lately.

GTChick01, how long have you been doing 4-5 miles 4x a week?

Sometimes just simple changes in routine will help you break through the endurance barrier.

Mix it up a little. Maybe one day do a little shorter but run the entire time (don't stop and push yourself). One day do one that is 6-7 miles running/walking. The other two days do your regular 4-5 miles.

Only for about a month. I started off trying to do the "Couch potato to 5k" program from www.coolrunning.com, but everytime I get to about week 5 (I've tried it a couple of times over the past 5 months) it's like I hit a wall and can't go any furthur. I was doing the running portions at 6.0mph and the walking at 4.3mph. I'm not able to run for longer than 8 minutes straight without feeling like I'm going to pass out.
Over the past month, I have dropped it down from 6.0 to 5.7 to see if that helps and it has a little. Right now I'm able to run 3 min/walk 2 min for 30 minutes. Then I walk another 15-30 mins and I adjust the incline to help work my legs a little.
It just pisses me off because a year and a half ago, before my car wreck, I was able to run 3 miles straight, no problem. I don't know why I'm not able to now.
I can try what you're suggesting, but how do I run the entire time? Drop the mph down more? I feel like I'm barely going anywhere as it is at 5.7. LOL :(

Yea, drop the speed down. There is a thing in running called the "govenor affect" which basically states "if you run slow enough you can run forever."

On my long runs I don't care how far I run I just want to make sure I get in 90 minutes to 2 hours. I'll even walk somtimes. You have to train your body to go "the distance."

The other workouts, a little faster, maybe a little shorter, will teach your legs to go faster.

When Al P was having problems breaking his magical number as far as speed running I told him the same. A few workouts need to be slow, long and without regard to time. Others need to be stepped up with some bursts of speed.

Eventually your body comes accustom to the speed your legs are turning while doing your bursts and carry over to your longer distances.

Then you are running a 5K under 24... then under 22... then under 20... which is much better than 90% of the public.

It's not difficult to do a sub-20 5K just takes some work.

Only 1 or 2 miles, but I run them hard. Trying to get my 2 mile under 12:30.

I'm planning on starting up again. I used to run cross country in High school and continued to run a little bit in college, but its probably been 4 or 5 yrs since I've run any good distance past a mile. Anyone got any good advice for someone wanting to start up again? I'd like to work my way back up to 30 mi/wk, nothing too major.

<-------Not trying to hijack anyone's thread :D

I've put a few people on the program below. All with great results.

Good info, looks like a decent program. You know how hard it is to go slow though after being able to run in the past? I think that is why I have quit so many times in the past. Gonna have to try and stay with the program and not get ahead.

Thanks!

Not doing shit lately. Usually a mile or mile and a half. But I been taking it easy for a while since my January through March period where I was doing 15+ miles a week and lifting weights, and riding the bike and the stair mill..... yea....FUCK!

Shit. Lance is the man when it comes to the bike.

He does in a day on the bike what I do in a week (and at a much higher level!). At most I'm 3 hours or so a day training but typically 2-3 hours. Lance spent 8 hours a day on the bike.

I'm blessed with a situation where I work at home and since my company is project based it doesn't matter if I get my work done at midnight or 8am.

Learn to run on your toes and work on your stride cadence.

Most people run heel-to-toe which puts way too much force on your knees. Also running heel-to-toe puts your body in a position where you spend too much time on each foot.

The key to running is getting your cadence up to 180 steps per minute even if you have to shorten your stride and get on your toes. Lean a little forward, kick your leg back and towards your ass. Don't lean forward at the waist but lean forward from your ankles. Let gravity do the work.

Definetly not easy to master but once you do most of your injuries will go away. It took me about 6 months to go from a heel-striker to a toe runner.

I run as far as I can in 30 minutes at this point. it's kinda deprressing though, last summer I could go for an hour before my legs gave out. I just started back up though, so I'll be back to it in due time.
