AutoZone robbed by armed gunman
By DELANIA TRIGG, Register Staff Writer
Two customers and two employees of AutoZone were ordered to the floor by a man who walked into the auto parts retailer at about 8 p.m. Wednesday with a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from two cash registers.
When officers arrived at the store at 1702 E. Highway 82, witnesses told them a man entered the business through a front door and walked up behind two customers standing near the checkout area.
“The suspect ordered everyone to lie on the ground as he displayed a semi-automatic handgun. He ordered one of the employees to stand up and open the register,” said Chief Carl Dunlap.
He said the employee opened a register on the north side of the store and removed a cash drawer containing some money, placing it on the counter.
Dunlap said the suspect then told the employee to open the other register.
“The employee had troubled opening the other register and the robber became impatient. He apparently laid his handgun down by the south register and began grabbing the money from the north register. Only the north register contained money,” he explained.
Daniel Sustaita, an AutoZone employee, noticed the handgun on the counter and grabbed it.
Dunlap said the employee told the suspect to lie on the floor, but the suspect refused, knocking some items off the counter before heading for the door.
Another AutoZone employee, Shawn Keen — an assistant manager — with the store, apparently told Sustaita to fire a shot at the suspect, according to Dunlap.
A shot was fired, shattering the glass front door.
The suspect grabbed a purse from customer Julia Logan and headed out the door.
An officer investigating the robbery reported finding pins, car keys and other personal items from the purse scattered on the floor.
The suspect is believed to have fled southbound on nearby Howeth Street in a teal green 1995 to 2005 model Ford Mustang.
The victims described the suspect as a white male a little over six-ft. tall. He wore sunglasses, blue jeans, and blue jean sleeveless shirt with a gray shirt underneath. He was also wearing a bandana under a blue baseball cap.
The suspect apparently got away with the woman’s purse and an unknown amount of money from the cash register.
Dunlap said investigators found a handgun, one empty shell and broken glass from the front door on the floor of the store.
No one has been arrested in connection with the robbery, and the investigation is ongoing he said.
