My roommate wants to pick up an AR-15 to shoot since he joined the Marines and he wants something to practice with during the year since he re-qualifies once each year and only gets 3 days to practice with an actual M-16. Sorry if its an ignorant question, but what are the differences between the AR-15 and the M-16 other than the burst/auto that the AR lacks? Also, what brands of AR are good and which are better to avoid?

Yes, there are some internal differences (trigger, disconnector, selector, hammer and bolt carrier).
But functionality wise, the only difference is that one is semi-auto and one is capable of full-auto/burst.
An AR-15 will shoot/feel the exact same as an M-16 with the selector on 'single shot'.
I would imagine that any standard 20" AR will give him the same experience/training that he would get on the range in the Marines.
Good brands: Rock River Arms, Colt, Armalite, Bushmaster, etc. Just about all of the big names have good products.

Ive been looking on some of those maunfacturer's sites and they have different options for the metal the barrel is made of. Which would be best suited for this one?

Just a standard chrome magnetic particle tested bored barrel is what the govt gets.

So just any A2 model of the AR15 from any of the above listed manufacturers would suffice?
