If you had 1k and were going to buy a 1911, would you buy a Colt Series 80 or Sig Revolution?

I like the firing pin safety on the Series 80 over the Series 70 so that's out.

This gun will be used for recreational shooting and probably IDPA but I want quality over quantity.

If theres something else (Kimber, Para, RIA, Springfield) you would buy, post it up but please tell me why.

I have been researching the different mfgs and models but I would like to know what some of you gun guys have to say.

Thanks for your help.

I shoot a Kimber 1911 and like it. It is the only 1911 I have shot so I can't say much. Real solid.

Ive shot a Kimber and loved it, but if it was me, Id get an original Colt Govmt model. I love those.

I'd get a less expensive 1911 like the Springfield GI model and use the rest on some other firearm of choice.

I carried the Govt model when I was active duty Coast Guard and I loved it. I'm sure I could rent and fire the others but I was curious what some of the other folks thought... I know of at least one guy from this joint who uses Sig as his duty weapon and that says a lot...

I thought about that... The GI is a decent gun and would probably fit what I plan to do.... I'm just not sure about the quality... Have you shot the GI?

I love my Series 80. I have never had any problems with it in the 6+ years I have had it, but I have shot a few Kimbers and they are REALLY nice. You would save a little going with the Colt, but $1k would get you a nice Kimber.

How many rounds have you fired through your Colt? I'm partial to the Colt because of the history...

I agree with you on the Kimbers but from what I've seen, for 1k, the Sig has all metal internals. It also has wood grips instead of plastic. It also has (I'm not sure I really need) night sights.

Like I said, I'm looking at the fine print... I want a quality pistola... :)

I know the Sig P series are renoun for being great guns. Ive shot a Sig P220 and it was a solid gun. I havent shot the GSR models though, but Im sure they are just as good quality as any Sig. Id go rent some and see. You are used to the Govmt model so maybe thats the best since youre already comfortable with it.

i own a springfield GI and a colt, i wouldnt trade either. which series 80 colt are you looking at? just saying series 80 is a pretty broad selection of guns. currently the only colts that arent series 80 are the gunsite, WWI and the series 70 reissue. if i were you i would find a new gold cup trophy and enjoy. you also wont lose your ass on it if you decide to sell it later.

Springfield XD ~500. Excellent bang for buck, better than Glock at 100 bucks less.

Para ~750-850. Excellent pistol all around, innovative LDA. Kaufman uses these for standard issue.

H&K Tactical is ~1k. Arguably the best factory pistol made.

STI custom is ~2k. :) Totally awesome. Dream pistol.

I only know Sig by reputation.

I haven't looked at many pistols at 1k range other than H&K.
S&W, Rock River, Springfield, and several others have steel pistols 1k-1.2k price.

I have shot a couple S&W, and they appear well made, but never are accurate out of the box. For that money, it should be.

With the custom parts from Springfield, you can turn a XD into 1k pistol in nothing flat with trigger job, barrel, sights, polishing, custom coating, etc. And have a wonderful handgun.

Look used. DW has awful resale, I never figured out why. Some of the most accurate guns out of the box ever, barring a few of the models from the 80s.

I have an XD-45... love it... lots of fun to shoot...

STI has started making an entry level 1911 for about $600... Thats also an option.

What do you want out of the gun? The Sig GSR Revolutions are made out of some great parts but you pretty much either love them or hate them, from the Sig'ified aesthetics on down, everyone I know who has owned or shot one was 100% love or hate, about 60/40 split. I would not buy a kimber, I don't like them as much as some other options for the same money.

The STI Spartan uses 3 actual STI components, not the slide/frame or barrel, the rest aren't junk, but they aren't great either.

If I were going to get a 1911 I think I would get a Dan Wesson 10mm.
Great gun in a great caliber, but you had better reload! Dan Wesson was bought out by CZ, so the guns are priced a bit friendlier now.

Yeah, 10mm is on the edge of open-box affordable. Still reasonable enough though.

Not compared to .45acp, but I like to shoot my stuff a lot. I wish it would get more popular so the prices would drop and I could buy a 10mm.

No shit? I haven't bought any a long time. Still, that's nothing compared to my 41AE, I was offered $5 a round. The empty box is worth $10.

Haven't been on 1911 forums for awhile, so my info may be a bit dated, but I'd get the Sig. Looks like no MIM internals. AFAIK, Colt & Kimber are both still using MIM parts. Kimbers offer a tight frame to slide fit, so they're accurate & feel good, but MIM parts are strictly a bean-counter decision.

Sig builds fine-ass firearms. Many federal / state agencies spec 'em. Their 1911 sounds like it lives up to their standards:

All stainless steel frame and slide machined to exacting tolerances and hand-fitted to insure reliability and performance. Like all SIGARMS® products the new Revolution™ contains only premium internal parts including a match grade barrel, hammer/sear set and trigger. The slide sports Novak® night sights. The frame features 25-line per inch checkering on the front strap and 20-line per inch on the mainspring housing and is complimented by a set of checkered custom wood grips. Both the frame and slide on the new Revolution™ are de-horned making it ideal for perfect full-size concealed carry. For safety the GSR features a beavertail grip safety with speed bump, extended thumb safety, firing pin safety and hammer intercept notch.

From their web site; I added the italics to emphasize what I consider important. I presume 'firing pin safety' means Series 80 functionality, whether or not they licensed the exact technology from Colt.

Buy a Colt / Kimber / Springfield and have the hammer, sear & extractor changed out for forged / tool steel parts & you'll end up with more $$$ in it than the Sig - without even considering Novak sights & a carry melt job. Get the Sig, keep it lubed to avoid slide to frame galling (both stainless) & shoot the hell out of it.

I tried, but got screwed out of the deal. Will be making a purchase of one w/in the next two weeks. Everyone I've talked to about it when doing my homework says they're very pleased with the quality. Just as long as you don't want something flashy...
