View Full Version : Any way to calculate calories burned.

Is their any some what accurate formulas to calculate how many calories you burn while riding a bike or jogging? I figured there has to be some way because so many machines will tell you. Starting this week I have started writing down everything I eat with calorie and fat, totals. It would be nice to see how much I burn through exercise.

do you have a membership at 24 hour? They have a product thats 92% accurate. Most accurate piece of equipment on the market. Obviously besides a metabolic chamber or something along those lines.
some people use HR to measure, but its not very accurate because it doesnt take into account anything with the body (BF vs LM, HT, WT).

No, I just use the schools gym, this is more for when im doing outside exercises. I hate doing cardio in the gym, and try and avoid it, I would rather be outside. I do have a heart rate monitor.

It is called the Bodybugg. Most calculators on a bike or treadmill or elliptical are going to be higher than what you really are burning.

Not gonna get 100% accurate unless you got a lot of test shit hooked up.
I use to have a power tap on my bike that would measure the wattage I produced while riding and I could convert that into kCals.
But, I measure up what I eat pretty accurately and can use my weight/body composition to gauge how many calories I burn during my training over the years.

really? I thought they were kind of low based on a chart i read...something like 280 cal for riding a bike at 13 mph for 30 min. I ususally ride at 15 mph average for 30 min and it never shows over 250. Not that 30 measley calories is a big deal......I was just mainly curious how accurate they were. I am sure both the chart and the bike are +-%15 or so.

go to target and get you a polar heart monitor unit.
Its a belt that you put water on and wrap around you're upper chest. Then you wear a watch. Yeah its damn accurate. They can also do lots of other cool shit.
worth its weight in gold IMHO

I already have one, it works great. I just figured their was some kind of formula with HR/time/ weight/ht, to figure out cal. burned.

how is HR to determine caloric burn 'damn accurate'? how does it measure your weight, height, body fat vs lean mass, temp of your core versus your skin, sweat rate?
im pretty sure that my caloric burn at 130bpm is going to be completely different than someone who is the same weight but 30+% body fat.

And what cardio shape they are in and what their true maximum heart rate is...
My tested maximum heart rate is over 200 when I was 40. According to the formula I should have a maximum heart of 180 or there about. At 130bpm I could run all day as long as I was taking in calories. For someone else they might be about to experience a heart attack.
I love my heart rate monitor but it sure isn't going to tell me how many calories I'm burning.
But it will tell me when I pushed to hard in a race and I'm about to bonk. :D
