so I've had a ton of sportbikes, and a couple of cruisers. Ever since i had a rather unpleasant get-off a couple years ago on the stuntbike and crushed my left hand, its been hard to ride sportbikes and i've been trying to get into the cruiser thing. i spent alot on the cruisers i had, so the missus had a real problem with me tearing them apart and chopping them, so i ended up selling them off and now i have a new project that i can pretty much do whatever the hell i want to. :) its a 79 yamaha XS750 with 14k original miles. It doesnt run right now, from looking at it its got busted ass petcocks and the carbs are probably gummed up. i'm gonna work on it today and tomorrow and see if i can get it to fire. Plan for the bike at this point is to find some shorter xs650 shocks and lower the rear 2 inches, rebuild the front forks with new progressive springs, find a harley or similiar rear fender and a sportser style seat and shave it down, and build some forward controls.

here's two pics of the finished product that i'm hoping to emulate, and the last is the bike i bought.

a KZ1000, but yeah, and I have been thinking this would be the kinda deal it needs.

cool man.. it really is not that hard to modify these older bikes to look cool.. i love the reliability and simplicity of the older bikes (not to mention the way cheap price tags) but i cannot stand the huge ass seats and gay chrome fenders.

Mine doesn't have chrome fenders, but it has the long seat! Are there any good websites to look at on these?

Those are two different bikes, yours is an XS, and the top looks like a Maxim. My best friend has a Maxim X he's wanting to sell if you want something a little closer to your desired end result.

of course i know it is a maxim. i was just showing the rear fender/harley sportster seat look that i am going for with the xs. Most of the xs's that i've found customized are wildly modded choppers or bobbers, and thats not really what i'm going for. maybe eventually but not now. out of curiousity. how much for the maxim? pm me.

the bike's running pretty good now.. new battery, cleaned the carbs, changed the oil, new spark plugs.. fires right up. :) still getting new air filter pods, manual petcocks, and a couple other things to get the bike running mechanically perfect but i'm happy as shit! now i'm starting to shop for the misc. parts i'm gonna use for the build. I think i'm going to go with 14" ape hangers, forward controls, shorter rear shocks to lower the ass, trailer fender and custom solo seat and build new exhaust pipes off the existing 3/2 headers. then paint the whole deal a satin color, probably black or maybe red.

oh and i'm still way under budget.. i'm probably gonna add a few trick goodies but i'll still be under 1,500 total including the bike. :)

how long do yall think these ape hangers are? this is almost exactly what i've decided to do, with a little different fender set up and forward controls and a different exhaust. i need to know what length apes to order. ordering everything next week. :)

I think you would be happy with a set of 12" apes.

little update: been orderin' shit.. my sweet new petcocks came in today, my grips and 16" inch apes are in the mail, got my cables and shit all lined up... now i'm fucking around with the back. I've decided that for now, i'm gonna go cheapass because i'm gettin married in a month, and fuck it, i just need to get this bitch done before my wallet disappears. So i'm going to put some solid 9" struts in place of the stock 12.5 shocks, a trailer fender, and build a small solo seat. i took the shocks off just for shits and giggles to see what it looked like slammed.. looks alot better. i chopped the shit out of the stock seat because it was just annoying the piss out of me, and i had nothing better to do. It's going in the garbage as soon as i get my trailer fender deal figured out and get a seat made. enough blah blah. i'll update again in a week or two when the stuff i ordered gets here, and i'll probably have the trailer fender and struts mounted.

figured it was about time for another update. i got the 16"s on, and i'm trying to decide if i want to delete the front brake and go with a jockey shift and throwing away the electric start and all that bullshit. today i'm gonna be cutting off the subframe behind the rear shock mounts, and getting some solid struts machined, and maybe if i have time working on building a seat

thanks man. i got the subframes chopped and modified the gauge cluster to where its just the tach in the center. looks alot cleaner i think. Today i'm going to be working on forward controls, fender supports, tank brackets, maybe even see if i can get a seat pan banged out. still not sure how i'm gonna do the jockey shift but i am going to keep the front brakes for now. If i can get all of the things i mentioned finished and welded up, i'll be doing real good. :) might actually have the bike back on the road soon if i can ever find somebody to make some struts for me.

What do you need them made out of ? What are the dimensions ? We're actually going to be in Temple this weekend for the nostalgia drags, so give me your phone number and I'll give you a call when we get down there, if you want.
