Okay so for the past few months i've been seriously considering getting me a bike. I've never had one before and the way gas prices are getting, i'm sure a bike will save me some serious cash. I live in Oakcliff and have to drive to UT Arlington M-F and work in richardson. Gas is killing me on the ol 2v so I'm pretty set on getting a bike. I'm planning on taking the training course so I can learn to ride. I was thinking of getting into a r6 or a cbr600 or something in those lines. What does everyone think of buell bikes? Do you recommend me getting a new or a used bike? I don't have 4k to drop on a new bike so I was thinking financing would be my best bet. Thanks for any help...

you wont get a new bike (save a 250) for 4k anyways, so get a loan or save ur pennies and pick up a 01+ bike to learn on. and DONT SKIMP OUT ON GEAR.

Don't buy new if money is an issue, you'll be throwing money away unless you plane to keep the thing forever. Also, as a new rider you are likely to drop it, which hurts alot less on a used bike.

So depending on your credit as far as financing... you basically incur $175 more a month, and that is going to help you save money? Especially when you will be able to actually use it 75% of the time due to weather?

$4k won't get you a new bike, you'll end up an '03 600 and older (with average miles that's not a POS)

Well, alot has to do with the fact that I'll be finished paying my stang (02 GT vert) in 2 more months...I pay $463 a mth+$150 for insurance and gas was killing me.. :( ...The car has been in my name ever since I bought it, never missed a payment nor was I ever late so my credit should be good. What type of bike do you guys recommend? I need something reliable...

If you are under 30yrs of age you might want to look at insurance on the bike before thinking you will save money(if you are buying a new bike).

The insurance for my 600RR bike was more than the bike payment. Also I was 31yrs old at the time. I was basicly paying a car payment. The bike payment was around $169/mo and the insurance worked out to be around $202/mo. Also, I didnt have any traffic violations on my record at the time either.

I love my Buell (it seems most here dont like them, but I am guessing they have never thrown a leg over one either). I dont know if the big buells would be good learning material, but it sure is fun!

LOL! if he gets hit on I35 the bike will be the least of his worries. And insurance will cover the bike....new or used.

And dont be a dumbshit! Make sure you wear all your gear!!!!! I am sick of seeing fellow riders die or get hurt cause they dont think they need it.......YOU FUCKING NEED IT! Its saved my ass on a few occasions.

Do you want a bike because you want a fun toy to play with or because you want to save money?

If you want to save money on gas etc. you need to buy a cheap older Honda cruiser or dual sport gas sipper. Even then, I would imagine it would take a couple years to really be an advantage financially.

The sportbike hobby isn't all that cheap. I tell most first timers not to buy new bikes. Most first time sportbike guys don't make a lot of money, don't have stellar credit, and don't have a lot to put down. They wind up with some screwball financing and are usually HORRIBLY upside down when they want to get a new bike, want to sell the bike, or are forced to sell the bike for some sort of financial emergency. Besides dropping a new near 10K dollar bike is really disappointing. Dropping an 02 R6 you paid 3K for doesn't bother you that much, not to mention parts to fix it are all over ebay and fairly cheap. Parts from the dealer or even current model USED parts are expensive as fuck.

Bikes also depreciate really quickly. You can buy a two year old 600 for 40% less than the new price from a private seller.

Sportbikes go through tires pretty quickly, the harder you ride the faster you will go trough them and brake pads, chains, clutches, etc.

Who are all you people worried about the highway??? Statistically the left lane of the highway is the safest place to be in a metropolitan area. Most fatal motorcycle accidents happen while turning left at an intersection while traveling less than 35mph.

37 mo for liability, I didn't think you were even in Dallas County???

I know it was a couple years before that, but my first 600 was just under $200/yr for liability. I think it was $192/yr. Since I put it on a payment plan (I was 18, just bought the damn bike, no I didn't have another $200! LOL) I think it was around 18 dollars and change per/mo in Dallas County with the payment plan.

OUCH! Should have called strictly cycles (a progressive dealer) They were the cheapest I ever came across in Dallas.

I no longer live in Dallas County, I'm over 25, my personal bike is an 05 600RR. I don't technically have "full" coverage. I adjusted the levels of all the different coverages and added/denied other coverages (such as no rental car for example, etc.) but my insurance is 6XX/yr.

I bought my 636 used with 2k miles. Probably saved 3k bucks then going out and buying a new one. It was a heck of a lot more dependable than your new bike. just sayin.

Whatever you save in gas you will make up for in tires. Tires last around 5-8k miles and you will spend over 300 for a set of new tires.

Don't even think about new... I would be willing to bet money that you will drop it, or lay it down at some point while learning, it happens. The good thing about used "beginner" bike is there is always a market. Buy one, ride it for a year, and if you took care of it you will probally be able to sell it for what you paid. :D

I would look at something like an SV650, it a vtwin that handles pretty damn good, and you don't have to rev the hell out of it to get goin.

Like mentioned go ahead and set the money aside for good gear!! I go to UTA, copper fucking sucks in a car, let alone a bike. People are fucking nuts over there.

Statistically, most people don't live in Dallas either...I am sure riding on the highway is fine....but let me qualify my statement a little more....if you ride a motorcycle anywhere in the DFW metroplex, you are asking for it. There are to many idiot fuck drivers around here.

Ok, well I guess i'm just gonna save some money, maybe get a small loan from the bank or something to buy me a used 01-03 model bike. Where is the best place to look for a good used bike?

I've got Progressive, and pay $155/mo for full coverage, do you think Strictly can lower that?

What is everyones opinion on the buell Firebolt xb9r? I was checking them out online and I like the looks of them. MSRP is $8,995 and that seems pretty good. Either that or a GSX-R600 MSRP $8,899 is not bad either. I like these two the best, which one is better?

Depends on what you are looking for. The Buell is a little less common, and sans lower fairing. The riding position looks to be similar, but I've not sat on either. The Buell will be torquier with the Vtwin, and the GSXR will make more power, but you've gotta rev it to get there (7500rpm vs 15000). Ride them both and see what suits you better.

I bought my 1st bike new, pay about $150 a month for full coverage (21 w/ a speeding ticket). I got a 06 R6, but any of the common 600cc bikes are good. I also did not skimp on gear. Of course I had a pretty big budget to work with, and just bought what i wanted. I figure in a few years I will trade up to a liter bike, or maybe just keep the 600 for fun, and have em both.
