No... I'm not going to go out and spend $150 on a slug barrel I'm not going to be hunting big game with my 12 gauge but I just wanted to see who else here shoots slugs out of their regular shotgun barrel . I figured I'd use my new Mossberg mostly for "fun" purposes, and home protection, so that means mostly buckshot and slugs. I know my grouping wont be great ( wouldn't expect it to be but are there any big drawbacks besides accuracy when using a regular shot barrel with slugs. From what I hear it's best to stay away from steal and go with some lead magnums but anything else I should worry about?

The gun is a Mossberg 500 12 gauge that has pics up in the "Will Rogers" thread.
Also, anyone have any good suggestions on brand and what not for shells? I'm not really a big shotgun guy more of a tactical carbine fellow but any advice is appreciated.

btw... How bad should I expect my groupings to be?

If it isn't a shotgun barrel with riflings (Which I don't think that Moss is...) then you want to use Rifled Slugs. Make sure they aren't Sabot Slugs. Rifled Rifled Rifled. I personally use Winchester and Remington for my shotty. (Buck and slugs) I also like the 1oz slugs. Recap:

12ga. 2 3/4 in shells. Rifled slugs. 1oz.

Yes, winchester super X.

I don't think you want to shoot them out of a full choke though.

Picked up some 3" rifled Remington magnums, should be fun.

cylinder bore only. anything tighter and you will, at best, shoot your choke out. An ounce and a half of 000 will be more than enough to make an intruder "stop and think about it" on his way to the floor.

I bought 4 shot for my sister for self-defense.

I read that buck shot or slug may go though the house and kill the neighbor.

slugs are a bad self defense round unless you've got really good aim because of their ability to penetrate several walls and remain lethal. 00 is not as bad but can still remain lethal through several layers of sheetrock.
I've also read that #4 is an acceptable self defense load if you're worried about wall penetration. The main downfall of #4 is that it is only lethal out to about 30 feet.

Because I used to hunt public lands for deer, I have had several slug guns, the first was a cylinder bore short barrel single shot tapped for a scope. With an added cheap shotgun scope, I had 4" groups using Remington rifled slugs at 75 yards, and "pie plate" grouping at 125-ish, which was the farthest I was trying. The next year I bought an H&R bull-barreled single with a rifled barrel, it was as close to a "tack-driver" as you would expect a shotgun to be. Was awesome with handloads.

As for the buckshot, I wouldn't use 000 or 00 unless no one else lives in 50 yard radius, it will travel through walls. I have actually dropped deer with #4 buckshot (before I knew better) and keep it in the gun today for theft deterrent.
