View Full Version : Some see impeachment as an option

Republican Senator Chuck Hagel is a decorated Vietnam War veteran, pro-lifer, and a fiscal conservative. He is also very outspoken and highly critical of President Bush regarding the Iraq War. I felt this was a very interesting perspective from a GOP Senator/War veteran.
GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a frequent critic of the war, stopped short of calling for Bush's impeachment. But he made clear that some lawmakers viewed that as an option should Bush choose to push ahead despite public sentiment against the war.
"Any president who says, I don't care, or I will not respond to what the people of this country are saying about Iraq or anything else, or I don't care what the Congress does, I am going to proceed _ if a president really believes that, then there are _ what I was pointing out, there are ways to deal with that," said Hagel, who is considering a 2008 presidential run.
Hagel described Bush as someone who doesn't believe he's accountable to anyone. "He's not accountable anymore, which isn't totally true. You can impeach him, and before this is over, you might see calls for his impeachment. I don't know. It depends on how this goes," Hagel told the magazine.

What impeachable offense has Bush committed?
Where in the Constitution does it say that the President and Congress are JOINT COMMANDERS IN CHIEF of the military?

There is ALWAYS "public sentiment against war." That is not a reason for impeachment.

Ya, there hasn't been any offenses committed warranting an impeachment. Just because you don't see eye to eye with the President? He has executed his job within his given powers.

Some see impeachment as an option...
...And some Senators see political opportunity where none exists. Being anti-Bush won't win a Republican primary, which happens before a presidential election, and being Republican really hurts his chances in a Democrat primary, so he no longer has a realistic chance at winning the presidency. And bringing up impeachment in this case shows he doesn't know the Constitution, which will hurt his chances with sentient voters, which could be a small demographic when you consider things like the Florida and Ohio voting incidents, and the number of people who think Jesse Jackson is looking out for anyone other than Jesse Jackson.
My prediction? Years from now, when people are looking at history and see that politicians used the Iraq situation purely for political gain, those that did will not be electable except by the lunatic fringe. It is a lose/lose situation in the long term for the anti-war crowd. If we stabilize Iraq, the anti- Iraq crowd was wrong. If we do not, it is because the anti-Iraq crowd forced troop pull-outs, which allowed the middle east stability to deteriorate, driving up gas prices to about $4/gal in Texas, and generally contributing to a less robust economy. Maybe being anti-war is a great short-term strategy, but it will hurt political careers in the long run.
Or I could be wrong.

exactly, the douche bags in politics respond solely to the money/perks handed out by lobbyists, they dont give two shits about what we want except for that 6 month period before elections when they have to fool the swing votes into believing they are on the same page as the politicians.

let me explain something...
i keep posting in this forum because i enjoy the subject of politics.
you just don't get it. i'm not affected by your or anyone else's criticism. it's the auspicious side affect of having a life and having self-esteem.
i've seen people basically get run off of this site or get berated to the point where they say enough. i've had people join MM and specifically tell me how they are tired of the relentless bashing and e-thuggery at dfwstangs.
however, i have never been able to understand the concept of being damaged in some way by a e-conversation on a message board. nothing that happens on here would be anything you would take home with you. it's something to do while you are working and while your wife is watching soapnet in the evenings.
the internet is a cursory engagement of your senses while you are not occupied by something real or substantial at the moment. i've seen people on this site where that is not the case and it confuses me.
oh well.......this was just an interesting news tid bit on senator hagel. take it easy.

I'd like to add a token bit of hilarity by pointing out that the eclimation point after each "Champion!" gives it that little extra touch of elegance. I mean, seriously, "Yeti Sports 9: Final Spit Champion" just doesn't have the same ring as "Yeti Sports 9: Final Spit Champion!"

Hello!
Oh... you're one of those who think that just because Saddam is gone, we can just pack up and go home. Nice. I'm all about the idea of leaving it a better place than when we entered it. Just going after Saddam and leaving is not and was never just the case. That would be something more along the lines as personal revenge. Our goal, like it always has been, is to make this world a better place. Now, I'm right there with you on everything else from unneeded illegal immigrant sympathy to the way the Border Patrol agents were handled in court. It disgusts me, but that has nothing to do with Iraq. Even if we had all are troops back here, do you really think things would be handled differently? Bush's stance on the illegals has nothing to do with anything else going on in this world. I truely believe he's afraid to tackle the problem and deal with it appropriately because so many people here already oppose him if he does so (like ACLU, LULAC, etc.). When he first gave the orders to enter Iraq, he had a strong following. Now that he's there, he's not going to leave it unfinished. He never had the support and never will have the support he needs to fight illegal immigration.
