Do you want to work in the yard before they send you off to a floorhand position or just straight to floorhand?

They're ONLY making $1300 a week for off shore?? Shop around on the jobs, because it sounds like they're getting screwed. Guys who work just around the DFW area as a floorhand bring home at the least $1700.

Aren't you in school? Why are you wanting to work in the field? And does an offshore worker seriously make nearly $90K a year?

Get an internship or Co-OP. It's not quite as good pay in alot of cases, but It's still great compared to most, and It will be applicable experience. And They will only expect you to work the terms you mentioned. Go to your schools co-op office or career assistance office and see what they can help you with!

People in the oilfield make good money right now. If the price of oil goes back down for any extended amount of time though the party is over.

I doubt I can get a internship for a job that has nothing to do with my major lol

If you go offshore training alone is 3+ months long for service techs. Good luck on that.

If you're in school working on an oil rig isn't exactly a job for you. Yes, you work 7 days on and 7 days off; BUT if they have to move the rig it is mandatory for you to come in and work a full day plus however late it takes. Not to mention you're either going to work 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am and add in driving time which on a good location is 30-45 mins..Not to mention you're going to be tired and not wanting to do a damn thing, but eat and sleep. If you have no experience odds are you won't get it unless you know someone and they're willing to take a chance on you. It's dangerous and getting someone who doesn't know a thing about a rig will kill the whole the crew. If you have a forklift license already that's a plus so they don't have to train you on how to operate a forklift when you get there.

Call up Patterson, Nabors, Pioneer, Parker. All drilling companies. You can also find a rig and find the drilling trailor and ask them, they might hire you on the spot.

My husband works for Patterson........I'm thinking Nabors or Cactus would be your best bet. I think Patterson requires some experience or working in the yard first...and it's better if you have a forklift license beforehand also, but not required.

97Blkpny what rig?

No, this is my first rig. I got on with Weatherford mid Feb. and have been here since March 6th. Things are going SLOW! :) We should be done here shortly.

I thought you were in an aerospace or something. I'm not talking about an oil related internship...but send your resume to various palces like Lockheed, Raytheon, Bell...anybody along those lines.

Got an offer from a friend to work offshore in La. (Louisiana) but I would have to move down there. I don't want to leave here but the money is great. I do have a question though. To the guys that have worked on a rig and no longer do, why did you leave? And how stabile is that kind of work?

Most of the people that I know (self included) got tired of the "life" not to mention got a lot better "land based" job. :D If you are a hard worker and learn fast they will keep you working. However no need to apply if you have a thin skin and wear your feelings on your sleeve; because they are going to f**k with you "big time" until you have been there for a while! LOL, we had a guy looking for a "left handed impact" for 10 hours, even the tool pusher was in on it..
