View Full Version : Fan in Laptop

For a while now, my lap top has been running very loud. (3 year old laptop) The fan is running on high all the time because it gets extremely hot. (And I mean extremely, I burnt my leg on it once.) I went to Staples and purchased a laptop cool pad which has 2 fans in it, to help the cool down process. Anyways, I thought it was working because the fan in my laptop wasn't running loud. I turned it over and realized the actual laptop fan isn't running at all. There was a bit of a dust bunny in the fan but I blew it out and it still won't run. Do I need to replace the fan or is there something else I can do? Can you even replace laptop fans? I really just need a new laptop. :(

You can replace the fan, but i doubt you will be able to do it without the proprietary tools laptops usually require.
What kind of machine is it? Model/manuf?

The computer support here on campus sucks balls. The only thing they ever do to your computer is a system restore. So I don't want to take it to them to fix it.

Google that + fan replacement.. they're anywhere from 10-65 bucks for the fan.

Its not hard. I just sold my laptop and i took mine completely apart and dusted it. it was really dirty and it barely gets hot now

It depends, minicruz. My older HP has screws in it that have 3 points, and you can't really get into the machine without the tool, or fuckin it up.

Well the place on campus can't fix it so where do I take it? Best buy? Should I just buy some of that canned air and see if that helps?

What has happened is you have very likely allowed your laptop to accumulate way too much dust inside of it. It's too late for canned air. It has gotten too hot, electric components in the fan's motor have died. You are just going to have to replace it (the fan).

I'm sure you or someone you know has the mechanical/electrical know-how to fix it. It's really a simple process. As someone said, just order the correct fan and put it/have someone else put it in.
Until then, download a program like Motherboard Monitor and keep a close eye on your computer temps. You will be able to continue to use your laptop, but not for extended periods of time before you get the new fan in there. Be sure whoever puts in your new fan gives the laptop a good air cleaning.

Thanks for all the help. This is just the first of many problems as I am now finding out. Now my USB ports don't recognize what is plugged in. :( I think this pc has just bit the dust.

I might have a fan that will work...I will need to see the laptop in question or if you can get me a picture of the fan (the case and the fan outlet might do).
I have several broken HP and Compaq parts laptops that might have the fan you need.
Shoot me a PM with some info and I'll see what I can come up with.

Thanks very much for the offer but my after talking to my dad, he is going to get me a new computer. This one has more problems than just the fan. He had the exact laptop previously and it has already died on him. So again, thanks for everyone's input! :)
