View Full Version : Libertarians?
Anyone have any direct knowledge of these people (I don't think they have anything to do with libertines).
I'm sick of the Republicans and more so with the Democrats.

They just believe that all people are the absolute owners of their own lives, and should be free to do whatever they wish with themselves or property, as long as they allow others to have the same liberties.

Here's the wiki on it:

Basically, you can do whatever you want and not take responsibility for it (in a nutshell).

And how is this different from the Democrats and Republicans?

If you value 2nd and 4th amendment rights over most others then it makes sense to you. Not that others are important, but that these are traditionally the rights that get stomped on by a Federalist government.

Are you saying that at one end of the spectrum we have the Democrats that prefer to have a power in the central (national) government, in the middle are the Republicans with power at the regional and local level per Nixon/Reagan, and the Libertarians at the other end of the spectrum with power at the individual level?

No, I'm saying that both traditional parties favor consolidated power, they just disagree on how it is used. Libertarians are the anti-federalists of the day. Right now they have taken a decidedly anarchist turn, which has cost them moderate voters; liberals who are fine with firearms ownership, or conservatives who are fine with removing various Patriot act provisions.

What is the difference between a Democrat and a Republican beside Dems (more tax) and Reps (less tax)?

It varies. In the past the Democrats were the supporters of state's rights, free trade and hard currency. Compare that with today. At this time the big difference seems to be who can spend the most :(

Democrats believe your right to bear arms is expendable in the name of safety.
Republicans believe your right to privacy is expendable in the name of safety.
Democrats believe you and I... I mean the government should swallow the cost of social programs for the poor(welfare) It is apparently our responsibility to pay for the children of, as well as the roof over the head of, a man that chooses to sell crack and must roll on 24's in all name brand "gear"
Republicans believe that the poor should be provided for through volunteer organizations, churches, etc...(they do however spend obscene money on social programs for the poor these days in order to pander votes from the poor/uneducated)

I'm a registered Libertarian, and you clowns aren't even close.
Libertarians are fiscal conservatives and social liberals. Libertarians believe in a small government with a minumum of social support programs (no welfare, uneployment, WIC, food stamps, etc). We also beleive a balanced Federal budget is a requirement, and deficits would be illegal.
The LP also believes the government has little or no business in your personal lives, and individual liberties are irrevocable. Libertarians are basically what Republicans were about 30-40 years ago (Barry Goldwater Republicans).

Go to the LP site and read thier political platform. No where does it say "everything is OK if it doesn't hurt someone".

I went to a local Lib convention in Lubbock. It was nothing at all like that; they were mostly anarchists and survivalists. Nothing got done, just a bunch of yelling.

I just reread the whole platform, and didn't see that. What section of the platform was it in?

It's a party with great ideas that can never really happen in today's world. That and when your presidential candidate (Michael Badnarik last election) vows to implode the UN building as his first presidential act you have to wonder how wacky some of their members are.
Get the Koch brothers some support though and they might actually have a chance against Hillary and McCain.
I voted for Harry Browne in 2000 btw.
