I just bought a laptop and I have about 20gb worth of music and a few other misc. files I need to put on there from my desktop. I would rather not have to save them to a thumb drive and copy them over that way. What is the best way to transfer the files?

Get you a little hub or switch and set up file sharing on both machines.

You could just setup a quick network and share the drive and copy that way ...

i reccomend using 3.5" floppy disks.

If you have gigabit ethernet cards, i think .g allows you to use a regular ethernet cable as a xover cable. May be worth checking out if the windows small netwk mgr doesn't help.

Yeah, you don't need a switch to connect just two computers, you can buy a crossover cable and just directly connect them to each other. I don't want to get into the network side of things, but if you have any computer smart friends, now would be the time to call them in to set it up, even though its about as hard as Mach1Marauder after 10 beers in a strip club to setup.

Another idea would be to buy a IDE to USB 2.0 enclosure, put your desktop's HDD in that and plug it into your laptop.

Something like this:

haha. I bought a belkin transfer cable (before I asked anyone) thinking it would be easy but the software that came with it is stupid. On 2nd thought, I may be the stupid one, :D but my IT guys at work showed me how to use a router and network them, so im gunna give it a shot this weekend.
