View Full Version : Sioux trackers to hunt Taliban

I've never heard of these guys, hopefully they'll come up with some good stuff due to the skills they have.
AN ELITE group of native American trackers is joining the hunt for terrorists crossing Afghanistan’s borders.
The unit, the Shadow Wolves, was recruited from several tribes, including the Navajo, Sioux, Lakota and Apache. It is being sent to Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to pass on ancestral sign-reading skills to local border units.
In recent years, members of the Shadow Wolves have mainly tracked drug and people smugglers along the US border with Mexico.
But the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan and the American military’s failure to hunt down Osama Bin Laden — still at large on his 50th birthday yesterday — has prompted the Pentagon to requisition them.
Robert M Gates, the US defence secretary, said last month: “If I were Osama Bin Laden, I’d keep looking over my shoulder.”
The Pentagon has been alarmed at the ease with which Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters have been slipping in and out of Afghanistan. Defence officials are convinced their movements can be curtailed by the Shadow Wolves.
The unit has earned international respect for its tracking skills in the harsh Arizona desert.
It was founded in the early 1970s to curb the flow of marijuana into the US from Mexico and has since tracked people-smugglers across hundreds of square miles of the Tohono O’odham tribal reservation, southwest of Tucson.
Harold Thompson, a Navajo Indian, and Gary Ortega, from the Tohono reservation, are experts at “cutting sign”, the traditional Indian method of finding and following minute clues from a barren landscape. They can detect twigs snapped by passing humans or hair snagged on a branch and tell how long a sliver of food may have lain in the dirt.
Some military experts want the Shadow Wolves to help to track down Bin Laden. Despite a $25m bounty on his head and the use of billions of dollars worth of sophisticated equipment — including pilotless drones, electronic sensors, infrared cameras and satellite surveillance — US forces have so far failed to fulfil President Bush’s promise to capture Bin Laden “dead or alive”.
But a senior US official insisted last week that Bin Laden’s trail had “not gone stone cold”.
Vice-Admiral Mike McConnell, the new US director of national intelligence, told a Senate committee that Bin Laden and his lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, were setting up new training camps in northwestern Pakistan.

interesting, but could be potentially embarrassing for the u.s. military if a group of american indians go in and find osama or other key personal.

I don't care if a troop of Girl Scouts find him. It would really do this country some good to watch that sob bleed. I think there has to be some closure for 9-11. Hussein just didn't fit the bill. :o Maybe they'll scalp his head and that fuckin beard. After all, New York was theirs first.

i want him to be captured too.
i'm just saying that it would humorous in an odd sort of way if a group of old school american indians found him after the u.s. military could not over the past few years.

That's just it. He was found by the US Military. The question is why was he let go. Because he was let go!

This is not the first time this has been done. I can't remember which war (WWII or Viet Nam), but I think they've been used before...
I predict they find him about a month before the next presidential election.

The Navajo were used in WWII as code talkers because the nips were able to break our code and thwart our missions.

It's pretty simple actually. Saudi Arabia was offered Bin Laden. They didn't want him, so they tried to pawn him off on President Clinton. President Clinton didn't want him because he didn't feel that the leader of Al Queada (sp?) was a security threat to the US. Funny how that worked out huh?

Clinton Card.
Let me rephrase that...Since the disasters of 9-11, under Bush's watch, he was surrounded in the Tora Bora Region. The troops were pulled back and there was no capture because "he was hiding in a cave" . Starting there was a major hype and focus directed toward Iraq and persuit of Bin Laden was forgotten.

More nonsense being spewed by the TFH Crew I see.
Native AMERICANS capturing Usama is a win for the country as they are AMERICANS. Its not like we hired some Sherpas from Tibet or something. Use you fucking brain for once. I personally hope they successful, the Code Talkers of WW2 are very proud of their service and their ability to help their country. Were Native Americans treated poorly in the past YES, but I bet that is Bush's fault too. Stop trying to turn everything into partisan bullshit....this is simply about a new tactic to capture Usama. Good god.

I would say that after the events of 9-11 that would have been fucking awesome!!! And smoking those mountains would (could) have been a good eye opener for any other weirdos that think they want to fuck with America. But...
As I remember the near capture of OBL, we trampled through the Taliban in Afganistan and things began to fall in place for us with killing a bunch of Al Qaeda up in the Tora Bora region that were gaurding the caves through a 5 (or 10) mile radius with good intel that OBL was holed up in one of the caves. If it's 10 miles we're still talking about an area about the size of DFW Airport. I'm not sure I ever got a clear understanding of why we retreated from the area other than the fact that it would be too difficult to find him.
Perhaps you can enlighten me old wise one.

Oh no, its too late for you to try to put this back on me. Enlighten your fucking self asshole and then come back and tell me why you think U.S. forces let him "get away".
Just an example of how little you know on the subject, it wasn't "good intel" that had OBL there. He was heard on the radio ordering the Al Qaeda guys around up until a few days before the mountains were completely overrun. That's a fact that I haven't seen disputed yet.
So go ahead and tell us all why he was "let go" since you have been saying that every time you get a chance on this site.

Al P sez sarcastically "Yes there was a conspiracy to let Bin Laden get away"
I asked "so you're saying that our military is inept...."
Which is it? Was there a "plan"? Or was our military not up to the task when it was right in front of them? I have nothing but respect and appreciation of our military. It's the suits that use em up that bothers me.
And BTW, I think it's very cool that the "First Americans" are helping out with our defense. I wish them well.

So you say Bush is an idiot for listening to the intel on Iraq but this intel was golden? Are you fucking kidding me? You have no idea what you are talking about. A search that encompasses that many miles with miles and miles of tunnels and rough terrain is not as simple as just closing in the circle.

So then we have no fucking intel. OK, now I'm getting it.
"A search that encompasses that many miles...." Yeah, I guess if it was easy everybody would be doing it. So lets go look in an area the size of Texas for some asshole that might have been involved instead of the guy that is bragging about it and is in one of these holes here. I see. Anti-logic.

this is getting easier all the time.
now lets talk about osama bin laden in tora bora around december 2001. mistakes were made by president bush and the u.s. military during this failed exercise.
and now it is public record that............
"However, efforts to kill or capture al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, in President Bush's later criticized words, "dead or alive",[117] failed as he escaped a battle in December 2001 in the mountainous region of Tora Bora, which escape the Bush Administration later acknowledged resulted from a failure to commit enough U.S. ground troops." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush
feel free to keep bring up the clinton card and i'll just counter point for point with a mistake by president bush and this administration. osama bin laden is still at large as a result of mistakes made from present time all the way back to the 1980s. you don't have enough fingers to point at the people responsible for this guy still being a menace to society.
admit that to yourself and put your clinton card back in the drawer. ;)
