i dont know either, but id like to hear what happened too. makes you really think about how careful we all should be and that we should not skimp out when it comes to our safety(not to imply that car wasnt safe, please dont interpret it that way guys).
anyways, i feel terrible for the driver, if it did hit that "pole" i wonder how far down track that thing is......and looks like regaurdless of how far down track it is, or even if he didnt hit it, that thing should be moved!!! actually, looking at that last pic closer, you can clearly see the "finsih line" stripe, so that thing is right next to the rail on the big end, im assuming that its what hold up the score board. fucking dangerous how close it is
be safe this year everyone

Slain race car driver identified
By Kelly Brown
American Staff Writer
This is what i got from the hattiesburg american
Lamar County Coroner Butch Benedict has identified the man that died during a drag race at the Hub City Drag Strip as Scott M. Williams, 29, of Clinton.
He said his office received the call around 4:30 p.m. from the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office. He said Williams, who was ejected from his car, was likely dead on impact.
The Eatonville track annually draws thousands of race fans to its three-day Mardi Gras races.
Monday night's races were cancelled after the accident. It was unclear if Tuesday's races would be held.
Continue checking HattiesburgAmerican.com for more details as they come in.

this is from the hattiesburgamerican website.
"Forrest County Coroner Butch Benedict said Williams was driving a Mustang when he lost control of the car. It hit a guard rail, then a lightpost.
When it struck the lightpost, the car came apart, said Capt. Glen Moore of the Forrest County Sheriff's Office, and Williams was thrown from it.
"Whenever it hit the signpost, the vehicle somewhat disintegrated," he said. "It broke apart into several pieces."
Officials at the Eatonville race track would not let media on the grounds following the accident.
An announcer said over the loudspeaker that there had been a death, that Williams had raced at the track for several years and would be badly missed.
The announcer said the track would be closed for repairs and Monday night's events were cancelled. Spectators' money would be refunded, the announcer said.
The dragway annually holds four days of races around Mardi Gras. The races began Saturday and were scheduled to end today.
Benedict said that in his six years as coroner, there had never been a fatality at the track, and said he didn't recall any fatalities during his previous six years as deputy coroner.
An autopsy will likely take place today. "

Damn, thats sad :(
Why would they do an autopsy  Just to see if he died on impact  Seems kinda pointless...

A friend of mine watched it happen. He said the car hit the steel pole and cut it in half and ejected the driver killing him. He also said it was a money grudge race.

Damn this sucks on a whole new level. I hate to see anyone wreck their car and certainly don't want to see someone lose their life over it...but this particular car appears like it was setup for 11's - I hope it wasn't as fast as stated above.
Just an observation but, If you look through the pics in the link that Jamesb posted, the first pic shows a guy standing there - the Y shaped piece of metal in front of him looks like a floor plate and part of a roll bar ripped out of the car - with the headliner behind it.
The last pic looks like the remnants of a fox body on the wrecker, judging by the bottom view of the bumper cover, and no evidence of any kind of cage structure in the car.
Either way, My condolences go out to the family. RIP.

I really dont think with the absolute best cage in the car the guy would have survived. Reading on yellowBullet.com they state he inpacted the beam right in the drivers side door. At high speeds the roll cage bars would just break since that beam is so sturdy built into the ground. The really bad thing is, if the display clocks wasn't that close to the track he probaly would have survived and just rolled the car in the field, but we will never know.
For me I have never liked the clocks right next to the track. I have been saying for a long time, one of these days someone is going to get killed running into them. They could help the problem by installing saftey water barrels in front of them like you see on the highways. These would have to be unstrapped and open at the top to absorb some of the impact. But again the clock supports would have to be away from the track. Just my .02

Wow someone else recalls that pro mod... I still remember looking at the rear half of the car... seeing the seat/ lenco levers... nothing in front of them... I knew that driver got killed. Really was a hard time going racing after that for a while.

Damn, I can't tell if it had any type of cage. On the ORSCA board, they kind of blame the metal guard rails...how they served as a ramp to launch the car. Anyway you look at it, it's always sad when these things happen. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong, I heard that the ADRL Pro Mods event isn't going on this year at TXR because of the metal guard rails. Is there talk to put concrete barriers in at TXR?

Don't know about either of those rumors, but I've heard the one about the concrete guardrails too. I would feel a lot better if they were in place.
In all the years I've been going to TXR, close to 20 years, I've only seen 4 wrecks where the car has made it over the guardrail. ALL of them were driver error, but none the less, the cars made it over the railing.

if they replace the guardrails at TXR they should widen that bitch a few feet during the process, thats one narrow mofo.
