LOL, i've been building my coupe since the summer of 2003, and i'm still "almost" done.
i need to get my shit together, life wise. The problem is the car is 98%finished, and just needs a little more but my life is really in need of overhaul, so its hard to push the car aside when its so close.

looks like i will not make the fall cruise, hopefully i can still pull the front wheels at the next FFW though. if not than i just need to relax, and take my time.

thanks everyone for your help.

take your time bro and do it right, building a car takes alot of time, especially if you got alot of other shit going on in your life, you can always put the car on the back burner, but you cant do that to your life...

That's since 2002 bro, that's 5 years, only 6 posts a day. I don't think that's part of any problem.

Put it on the side for awhile and do something else. Sooner or later you'll feel like getting back on the project again.

After my recent $1k plumbing repair and the transmission I just bought for our expedition I get to sit out yet another year again. Yippee.

Steve - try owning a car and having it down for 11 years, all the time its had 5 engines, 6 sets of wheel combinations, 4 transmissions, and two rear gearsets...and only driving it 300 miles (during its first 3 months of my ownership)...AND helping others work/fix their stuff BEFORE yours...

Thank goodness I've broken the habit of selling off my badass stuff...I have sworn not to let the next combination get away for this car...(Comet)

nope, the valve springs arent up to the task, besides, the X cam is just fine for some basic twisted wedges and a dualplane intake.

i cant even begin to imagine what all that would do to me, its a level of commitment i cannot even comprehend.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything about this...

What gives Steve? had it back together. And started it last nite about 6, ran for 15 minutes or so and then locked up. tried to start it again and heard a pop and then nothing. pulled the plugs, #4 was full of coolant, then tried to put a ratchet on the crank pulley and couldnt turn it,

i dont know what happened, but right now it seems a rod is bent, and motor wont turn. which is my luck, this is after spending my last 600 on a head port job when i should have put it else where.

You need to take the head off and figure out what happened. Did you check to see if you had oil pressure when you got it back together?

turbostang
02-14-2007, 10:39 PM
Sounds like the heads may have been ported through, or a headgasket didn't seal.. usually those are the only ways to get coolant into the motor that fast.

If it "thunked" when it died, most likely it bent a rod(s). When they bend the bottom of the piston hits the top edge of the counterweight.

On that particular motor, you won't be out much Steve... Remember those pistons weren't in the best of shape. Get a "rebuild" kit and put some flat tops in it this time.. .it will be worth a ton of power.

when it ran the first time it had good pressure, i was glued to the gauges.

i thought the pistons were fine? they are forged speed pro pistons  are those not ideal? and wouldnt some flat tops hit the valves in my heads without a dish like the pistons i have now?

recap

car was running fine, little smoke out of the pass. side header.

turned car off to get the exhaust all mounted up, and went to re fire it, that is when it locked up.

the motor was not running when it locked up.

number four was not full of water, it had some on the plug though.

my worst case guese is, a bent rod on number four, and my thought on the cause is either, head gasket did not seal? not sure why, it look did not look to have a problem when it was installed.

head ported into water jacket? not sure about that, it was done by a good shop with no reason to really think that.

or, the back intake bolt next to number four port did not feel right when it was torqued down. cause water to leak into that port.

You keep forgetting you have TFW/TW heads, valve clearance is not normally a problem with them.

The pistons are fine as far as brand etc..I used the SAME shortblock to make 700rwhp. The pistons weren't in very good shape, remember? The cylinders were WAY TO TIGHT when I first checked the motor. That's why I had to get it re-honed... They had a bunch of scuff marks from the first cam that came apart and the material that bedded in the skirts.

number four was not full of water, it had some on the plug though.

It may not have been full of water when you checked it, but it probably was at one time or other. :(

Don't sweat it steve. Get back on your feet and let the car sit for awhile, it isn't your primary car so it's not like your walking. you might Talk to Beau @ lloyds shop I think that he has some 351 parts laying around his garage that might help you out. Just HAULLA @ me if you need anything bro.

I know how you feel I just keep buying parts and I am further from having a running car than when I started. Hell when I bought it, it ran now I am always waiting on this part or that part. Mostly because I am cheap and I am trying to buy almost everything used or hookup style.
