I have lots of guns but never understood the whole large caliber pistol with a scope thing. I am sure there is a reason to have one I just haven't found one yet.

I used my Model 29 Smith to hunt hogs/boars. A .454 is a little different than a .44 Mag, though.

The .454 Casull is popular up there. I did pretty well with a friend's 629 .44 Mag.

I've been bear hunting up there, but we never found anything. But the shotgun was recommended. When we moose hunted, we took a shotgun, in case a bear showed up. I used my Parker Hale 7mm Mag, my dad used his .375 H&H Mag. My dad carried his Ruger .41 Magnum, I think the Blackhawk, it was single action. My dad did go on another hunt and his coworker got a moose with a .308 with iron sights. He was a good shot, I seen him hit a ptarmigan with it, of couse there was nothing left of the ptarmigan. Again we didn't get shit. Caribou hunting I used my 7 Mag and did well. We got several.

We take several guns. We had a .22LR for ptarmigan.

Do yourself a favor and get a Leupold big-bore scope. I had a really good Simmons 4X, it was fine for a 44Mag but on the 454 it spun the reticle.

My Leupold 3-9x is far better, and even the lines are finer. You want the tiniest reticle width you can get for that thing.

If you load I can share some things with you.

1st rule, don't shoot anything but 454 out of it. If you need light loads, load them with 454 brass, don't bother with 45Colt.

2nd rule, do not polish the cylinder face with anything abrasive. Do not damage the muzzle in any way, and do not damage the forcing cone in any way.

3rd, never use 451 jacketed bullets. If you buy ammo with jacketed bullets, especially Hornady ammo with XTPs, look to see what size the bullet is. Use a 452 diameter jacketed, and at least that large for cast.

4th, don't ever use soft swaged lead 45 bullets. Cheap is a relative word. After a box of 10 or 20 you'll know why.

6th, beware of light crimps, and never force a round in. If it has to be forced, something is wrong.

7th, if you want accuracy in competition, and in a hunting situation, cock the trigger with your off-hand.

Otherwise you'll love it.

Yes i do need a Leupold. I bought the Simmons used at the gun show for cheap but after a few rounds its way off. I will buy one soon.

I bought a box a 45 long colt and only fired 2 rounds out of it, never agian. I like Cor-Bon but can only find it on line. I have been using Hornady XTP in the 300 grain so i will keep an eye out for the diameter. I have never owned a 454 casull so im thankfull for the info.

Yep, I got pretty good with it for awhile too. Its been a long time since I shot competition.

That is one awesome caliber. I found two great bullets, one 255gr and one 325gr, and between them you can do just about everything except for super-long-range (1/4 mile) shooting. And even that is do-able.

I also got a Dan Wesson 445 Supermag. Same general concept but a stretched 44 mag instead of a 45 colt. I haven't done much with it. I got it due to rule changes but then I just gave up and lost interest in the sport. I can see it being just as good as the 454 for the most part.

Just be sure you clean the cylinder super good before firing long shells. But no abrasives other than bronze or nylon brush. I like bronze. You didn't ruin anything. Just treat it gently on the cylinder face. And don't try and polish off that fire ring. You'll probably just mess up the accuracy. Clean is good enough.

If you don't already reload, you should start. There are plenty here who can walk you through it. It isn't going to cost any more than 45 colt, and you can download them all you want. I may even have a few leftover oddballs you can try. None of them are super hot. Do you have a place to shoot?

I have been saving my shells for reload. I know someone who loads but i need to buy the dies. I live in Bedford so if you load 454 than maybe i can get with you. Yes i do have a place to shoot. My buddy lives out in the boones towards Alvarado and we shoot about every weekend.

Handgun hunting is pretty popular for various reasons in various terrain, and IHMSA competition grew out of people wanting a competitive venue for their hunting pistols. Also the calibers are suited for a sidearm where predators roam.

Elmer Keith and others popularized this sort of hunting arm by hotrodding the 45 Colt to compete with the 44 Magnum. In the late 70s to Early 80s several big-bore wildcats started finding homes in production guns, especially two popular hunting choices, a beefed up 45 colt and a beefed up 44 mag (they became the 454 Casull and 445 Supermag). The thing that really made big bore handgun hunting take off was the creation of affordable optics with long eye relief. Before that you were limited to close range handgun sighting systems that weren't suitable for 100 yard shots on game.

Lots of good calibers came out of those years. A lot of them all but died off, too.
