How in the hell do you land a soccer contract, making a million a week playing soccer? I know its a huge sport in all parts of the world except here........ but damn!!! I just read on yahoo sports that David Beckham is going to earn over 250 million over the time of his contract. Which comes out to about a million a week  according to them.
I could care less about MLS. But that kind of money for a 34 year old player on the downside of his career. Its FREAKIN soccer for crying out loud. Oh well, Im done.

I don't even think that he was worth that in his prime.

Woohoo, next we'll see Posh Spice in Playboy.

As for comparison, how much do you think Michael Jordan would be worth in his prime? Or imagine Babe Ruth being a free agent this year, how much would his services be worth?

He's 31 btw.

With a kid playing select soccer (and a huge Beckham fan) I have been reading about this all morning.

It has done it's job if the "sports snobs" on DFWStangs are talking about it. :p

He has a soccer academy in LA, partnered with AEG no less. This is more about hopefully pushing the MLS into the mainstream than about "soccer' itself.

Becks is just another notch in AEG's ginormous Entertainment/Sports belt.

I know all about playing select and classic soccer. I just dont care much for the sport itself personally. But Im not knocking it. To each his own. Im just amazed at his contract since the sport is not as big here as other professional sports. I didnt know it generated money like that for a team to be able to sign a single player to that amount.

His contract probably has certain criteria for him to earn the entire $250 million. They may require certain attendance, performance, tv rating, etc before he can collect the entire sum.

It doesn't really. Plus David Beckham isn't just an ordinary "single player." From a marketing standpoint he is the Michael Jordan of soccer. Has his own signature shoes/clothes from adidas just like Jordan does with Nike.

In England, he made more from endorsements, than he did from his salary. And his salary was HUGE!

Oh, I'm not. But neither of them have a "Jordan-esque" marketing campaign like Beckham does. That was my only point.

The R's can out dribble Becks anyday of the week!

Very true. That's the rub that "true" soccer fans have with this move. Just like the move to Real Madrid, this one seems to be $$ driven. The MLS and LA Galaxy stand to gain by leaps from this move too. There will be kids in China wearing LAG/Beckham jerseys. Never would have happened without a player this marketable. We have 4 jerseys at home ourselves.

Let me start by saying I am a HUGE fan. Have the books and movies and all that jazz. He keeps saying this isn't about the $$, but rather that he wants to bring soccer in the US to the forefront. Like I said earlier with a kid playing, I want nothing more than max exposure for the sport...doesn't hurt that I love the game myself too.

In the end, what else could be expected from his group? They call "him" Brand Beckham. You will see him in commercials for Gillette and Pepsi in the next few months as those are his largest sponsers.

I just watched my oldest daughters' last soccer game...after almost 17 years of her playing. She's a senior in college, and college ball ended in November. It was pretty sad for me...enjoy watching him while you can!

From a global perspective he is the largest sports figure there is.

I'm sure the majority of his money is coming from endorsements. His Nike cleats sell for like $400.00. He and the wife get followed around more by the papparazzi than most movie stars.

Well, if I didn't have 6 pairs of them (in youth sizes of course!) taking up space in a hall closet I wouldn't know either.

BTW, I wish I would have bought the 7th pair last week like I had intended. If they go up I will be pissed! LOL!

Here is a list of his endorsements:

Adidas
Gillette
Got Milk?
Marks & Spencer - clothier in England
Pepsi
Snickers Candy Bar
TBC Cosmetics
Vodafone
(and I'm sure many more with his deal in the states)

Along with his soccer academy in LA and one opening up in in London.

Hell he made about 35MM last year and is worth a couple hundred million already.

Beckham's freekicks are legendary since he played on the English National Team as a youth. He won MANY games with a well placed rocket-shot from 40 yards out...but to each his own.

After college ball, most players go to a "recreational" format...I meant her "official" last game (with announcer's and shit!) :D

I bet he doesn't even play out the length of this contract. This is a waste of time and money. Nobody cares about soccer in America. Mike Wilbon said it best the other day on the Dan Patrick show:

"Americans don't care about sports that they didn't invent."
