BlueRay got owned
From gamescentral.com:

So the "next gen" format war is upon us with two sides lined up, ready to take your money for your fourth version of Full Metal Jacket (I can't believe that you actually got it on Laser Disk...what were you thinking). If you are like most people, you are wondering a couple of things, the first being why would I want to buy another version of Full Metal Jacket, and is the $200 add on drive for the 360 worth the money, especially if I already have the PS3? More importantly, which one of the two (the PS3 or 360 HD DVD drive )looks and performs better. This article will attempt to answer these questions with background and information, as well as present evidence to why the ultimate conclusion was reached.

Overall this test was to see what next gen game system player is superior, and based on these tests, I would have to say that the 360 add on is the clear winner. Movies on the Blu Ray do look great, but with color levels that are more even allowing for greater levels of clarity, HD DVD just looks better, even over component cables.

Interesting Article
After more than a decade at the top of the video game heap, during which it sold more than 200 million consoles, Sony (SNE - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) is set to be knocked off its firm position as King of the Hill because of its flawed PlayStation 3 strategy. This is only one of many reasons to avoid shares of the consumer-electronics conglomerate, but it's certainly the most important.

I've been saying that since Sony FIRST announced it would be using Blu-ray for the PS3. I've always been a Nintendo fan, based on their indifference to the market-popular items, in favor things more innovative and family friendly. They've always had play/re-play value as priority one, graphics come in second. As for the PS3 and XBox have been graphics driven, and it's finally bitten Sony in the ass. They dared risk they're new console on a new media format, that's ridiculously expensive, just so they could claim an edge over the other systems. I never wanted an XBox, but now I'm gonna buy a 360 to get some of the exclusive titles for me, and get a Wii for my children, my wife, and myself to play with as a family. Glad to see Sony taking it in the ass. I've never liked ANY of Sony's products.

I doubt there is going to be a clear winner in the marketplace for quite sometime. Especially since some companies have signed exclusively to only allow rights for Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and not both

I agree with this statement.

Also, most of the movie studios are producing BlueRay DVDs while only Universal Pictures has signed on to HDDVD. However, ultimately it will be consumer that decides which format wins.

Microsoft certainly gave HDDVD a big boost by offering the HDDVD player for the XBox 360. Especially at such a low price. It has made it a tempting purchase for me, but I don't yet have an HDTV (coming next month)

BTW, Microsoft is working on a new XBox 360. It will have a new processor that runs cooler, but it will reportedly have HDDVD built in and be a smaller profile machine.

Nice comparison but it doesn't mean anything since he used the 1008i format. He's also using pictures of the screens, granted they were well done but there is no telling how much of the difference is due to the camera.

I own both and also am using 1080i. The biggest advantage to me is that the PS3 is whisper quiet compared to the HD Xbox. Granted there are noticeable difference in picture quality, though I'm not so certain they aren't due mostly to the software at this point. I still think Blu Ray tries to recreate the movie as close to how the theatrical release was as possible while HD DVD wants to give you the best possible picture.

If Sony would have included an HDMI cable and a media remote in my eyes it'd be the clear winner. They didn't though making the 360 considerably cheaper and easier to use with a slightly clearer picture on certain movies.

I really would like for Nintendo and Microsoft take the lead this time. Maybe next time Sony will not be so arrogant

Yup, Sony fucked this one up too.

It's like Beta VS VHS all over again.

It's not like either one is going to replace DVDs anytime soon. Hell how many people still don't have an HDTV? So many that congress pushed the analog shutdown date to 2-17-09.

Believe it or not there are still people out there without DVRs that actually record stuff on their VCR!

Both formats have enough of a following to survive. The biggest selling point for HD DVD though is that nearly all of them will play in regular DVD players as well, not so with Blu Ray. When the dvd format dies off at least the players will still work with the latest media, as long as it's not Blu Ray.

Sony would have a much better chance if they'd loosen up the reigns a bit on the proprietary BS. There is a reason why people forgot Beta, DAT, Mini Disc, SACD, etc. They were all great technologies, but you can't always be like apple with the iPod.

And I remember 10 years ago when we had the format war between DVD and Divx. Divx had better copy protections in place and the studios really wanted that. But Divx was pretty much soley funded by Circuit City and it flopped big time, leaving DVD as the winner. I think we'll see the same happen here for HD DVD.
