I had this same problem on my new laptop and couldn't figure it out. I had a friend come over and he google'd it. I think he put in the search bar what ever it says about the missing plug-in. He found it and had to download a couple of files.

I had a lot of trouble finding a free codec. look for intervideo WinDVD. If you can find a crack or a key gen that would work great, if not they have a free trial I think. other than that, the only thing I was able to find were codec's you had to pay for. most were about 30 bucks

not sure why I couldn't find this damn trial when I was looking but here is a 30 day nvidia trial.

I think I used to have a serial crack for it but don't know where its at. I'll see what I can come up with

What player is missing a codec? There's lots of media players and lots of codecs out there.... Little too vague to get very far.

it is typically the DVD codec, that is required with windows media player. most add on Media players that are bought have the codec built in. If you install a windows patch codec, or one form Nvidia, you can use any media player you want

Download Video Inspector from KC Softwares, its free.
http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?download
This program will tell you what audio and video codecs you need. It will tell you if you already have it installed or not. If you don't have the codec it will usually provide you with a link to download it. Solves about 99% of codec problems.
