Ok, would someone be willing to explain the torrent terminology. Please?
Ok, would someone be willing to explain the torrent terminology. Please?
torrents are files that have links to other people with the files...say you are downloading a dvd, you would download the torrent file which will connect you to everyone in the network with the same file, whether or not they have the full file. You download off individual peoples computers...
if there are lots of people "seeding" (allowing others to download off them) you will get higher speeds. The great thing about bit torrent is that you need to have a good ratio of upload to download to stay with certain websites. Good ratios will get you to better sites with better seeders and faster uploaders..
Quit bitching about speeds....atleast you are downloading that 4.2gb for FREE. I have downloaded a 4gig file at 10kbps...took forever but atleast I got it. Not everyone has a box to upload from...most people are using their home connections to download/upload. Most cable 3mb services had you capped at 30kb/s...now spread that out to all the people downloading. If you have 5 people seeding at 30kb/s, thats a total of 150kb/s upload... now if theres 1 person downloading, you can get the full 150kb/s. Now if theres 15 people downloading (just like it always is when stuff first comes out or after most people have downloaded it and moved on) you get a whopping 10kb/s.
seeders - people with part or whole file that are uploading
leechers - people downloading

Usenet has been my favorite method for the past 7-8 years. I only hit the torrents when what I want isn't posted via nntp (more times than not, it is... I believe usenet cycles through in excess of 2TB/day in postings).

Downloading a file at 317k right now from torrent-damage. If there aren't many seeds it will be slow. You also may need to tweak your client's settings for optimal speeds.

Generally, an ISP's usenet feed does blow severely. Luckily, Verizon's has been strong all these years. Plus, since they run their own and don't source it from other places, I get my full pipe speed from them (15mb/sec). Can't beat it with a stick.

Get yourself a usenet client (I prefer grabit, from shemes.com), and point it at news.verizon.net for all your questionably licensed software and pr0n needs. They allow 8 simultaneous connections, and actually have 2 nntp farms, but how to get to them isn't well publicized. I setup my own DNS for them, so I can download 16 threads at a time - news-va.oesm.org and news-nyc.oesm.org. A really good index of usenet postings can be found at newzbin.com.

What client are you using? PM me your e-mail address and I'll shoot you a torrent damage invite, usually a lot faster than the other ones.

http://www.mininova.org/ is another free one. There is also bitsoup and demonoid but they both make you sign up. http://empornium.us/ is a good one for porn!

compaired to mininova and bit soup that usenet is about as user friendly as a half rabid pitbull I have a full year subscription to use net and every single dowload ive tried has missing rar files and I keep having to go back to download them again and again , also they seem to get them a week late compaired to the peer hub and demanoid.com ive heard how much safer it is but how would you know until after your caught? :D

Remove news.verizon.net, change nyc.oesm.org to news-nyc.oesm.org. Make sure that on the properties for each you've entered your Verizon username/password, as Verizon requires you to log in. Right click both the servers, and choose to refresh group list. That will bring in the latest listing of groups. I would use an indexing site like newzbin.com to see what's been posted. Find something you like that's been posted in the past week, note the group. Then just update that group on either server and look for the posts.
As for people having bad luck with usenet, it's very service provider specific. Verizon's an oddity in that they have excellent news service out of the box, most ISPs service is completely unusable for binaries.

thats why it wont work hell I forgot about the verizon password crap , is there a way for me to put my usenet on this thing ? I tried to enter the password but I dont know if its the one to get me to the members area or the one they gave me to access their software? or the names to put in the boxes to get to use net on theat thing? thanks for the help btw... ;)

There aren't peers in a usenet connection. It's client/server.

He's talking about when running the bit torrent.. Run PG2, and update all the lists. Then run a torrent, look at all of the hits in the list. Now, imagine what hits are actually getting through. It doesn't block all of them.
That is why i don't use torrents. Call me paranoid? Sure, go ahead. But im not taking the chance.

Don't switch gears like that. I knew you did, but I guarantee people who are new to it all saw a few sentences about usenet, then an immediate recommendation for peer guardian... and didn't separate the two.
