View Full Version : Laptop protection.
I just ordered my first laptop, anything special I should know about firewalls or spyware/virus protection? This is also the most expensive computer I've owned, so I'd like to keep it safe from the beginning. Thanks in advance.

1. Run Firefox for your web browser.
2. Always leave the firewall turned on (even though it is tissue paper)
3. NEVER run Internet Explorer.
4. Run AVG antivirus. The free version is fine, but the pay version is better (only $49.99) http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1
5. Do your websurfing in a virtual machine (highly technical, extremely effective)
Generalized virtual machine instructions.
1. Download VMware Server and VMware Player (VMware.com)
2. Install VMware Server and build a new Windows XP virtual machine (you'll need a WinXP disk)
3. Uninstall VMware Server (without deleting the virtual machine)
4. Install VMware Player
5. Load up the virtual machine you created and set the virtual hard disk to NON PERSISTANT mode.
6. Boot the VM and use it for your websurfing. If you download warez, test it on the VM first. If the VM gets fucked, reboot and everything goes back to normal because none of the changes are saved on the non persistent disk.
There are more details on how to do this, but I'm too tired to type anything else. However if you do this for your laptop, you'll remain free of any virus/malware/spyware. Just be sure you have enough memory for the virtual machine. I recommend your laptop have at least 1GB if it is Windows XP. Then your VM can have 512MB or RAM.
Or you can forget all this shit, take your laptop back and get a MAC. You're life will be simpler and your laptop will always be virus free.
