First

i was gonna take the memory out of it, but it does not have the same key slot as my new computer.

Second

this thing has crashed on me and i have never been able to get it work right again. what can i do to make sure that nobody can get it working again and possible get info off of it? i had a friend try to reformat it with no luck, but i am not positive that there is not some info on it i do not want to be found.

i was gonna give it to a guy that deals with old computer and let him do something with it.

Take the hard drive out and set it on fire.

Find the largest magnet you can find and set it on your hard drive for a couple of days.

Or you can d/l the software from gateway that right 1s and 0s to the hard drive and then chunk it.

seriously i doubt anyone who "finds" your hard drive in the trash, can afford the equipment, or even the costs to have someone pull your data off of the hard drive after you either, 1 format it, or 2 take a heavy magnet to it.

To recover data after just a format doesn't require too fancy of software/hardware and can probably done with free tools.

To wipe it via software DoD standard is 7 passes writing both 1s and 0s.
