Why in the hell won't my pc recognize my daughter's ipod? Laptop sees it fine. Plug it in and a message box pops up that it's an unrecognized USB device. Went through all the windows bs troubleshoots, no evail. Updated iTunes, nada. Any other ideas?

Delete the USB adapters from device manager, reboot. Install IPOD drivers, then plug it in.

There are no ipod drivers. It shows up as a mass storage device, which is a standard usb driver that comes with Windows. External hdd's use it, usb sticks use it, media card readers use it, etc.

Bard, do other usb devices work on this computer? You might need to install the chipset drivers for the motherboard (my guess is they are usb2 and without the drivers, xp only comes with usb1 drivers (needed sp1 to support usb2))

If it's a custom build, you need to find out what model the board is, and download the chipset drivers from the manufacturers website. If it was a pre-built (like Dell or HP), you should be able to find the drivers needed on the builder's website by going through the computer's model number.

Sorry, I should have posted a follow up. I updated the drivers on the mobo mfg site and it still wouldn't work. While searching the net for solutions I found where someone had the same type of issue until they completely powered down the pc and removed the power cord for 30 sec (multiple restarts were worthless). It now recognizes the ipod and my daughter now has tunes :)

Thanks!

The ipod might be configured as an external mass storage device. You can change it within Itunes so you don't have to manually eject it every time. Still though I've had to reboot my PC before to get it recognize an ipod.

I've had to do it for hdd's and usb keys too. Windows just ... blows.

Bard, good to hear that got it working :) Odd, but good.
