by the time I was done 7 years later I had 2 complete motors,2 glides and close to 50,000 invested and it ran high 4's when I sold it.
Had a blast, went fast, worked my ass off on it countless hours, lost 2 girlfriends over it, made alot of friends, opened the door to for me to drive faster and more complcated cars and get paid to drive and work on other cars.
Over all worth ever damn penny and heatbreak
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.
What you spend on a car and what it runs is pointless. As long as you happy and the money comes out of your bank account who gives a fuck what other people think.
Also I would like to see you buy or build a low 5 second car for 20,000.
You might be able to buy a used up peice of shit roadster or dragster than might run close to that at 1500 pounds but thats about it

It doesn't take long to add up some money in a motor.
2200 block
1800 crank
1200 rods
6200 heads and intake
700 cam and lifeters
700 oil pan
650 belt drive
600 pistons
Thats 14,050 in basic parts.
Thankfully I didn't pay for machine work and I built the motors myself or I never would have ran half much as i did

5K for the car

About $1500 in the motor after selling the old parts from the previous motor.

Hundreds of hours doing little detail work to the car. Should run mid to high 7's on motor and with a $400 nitrous kit it could run 7.0's.(never will though)

Being happy with the street manners of the car, capable of driving it anywhere, anytime for 100K miles on a motor I built myself...

Priceless.

Machine work really adds on. Bore/hone/deck/o ring/clean/install cam bearings/align hone/check every little detail and correct. Freshen heads. Balance assy.

+ rings, bearings, head gaskets (priced cometics lately?), power adder, tune, sfi balancer & flexplate, stud kit for main caps and heads, flexplate bolts, crank scraper and/or windage tray, oil pump & pickup, HD oil pump drive, vacuum pump + pulleys and plumbing. Even freakin' engine paint & motor oil.

Then of course there is the built transmission + converter, hd driveshaft, built rear end, cage, harness, window net, parachute........

it adds up quick. all the little parts and shit will kill you. and Since I did all the work on the motor myself I know how much of a bitch some of it and why machine shops charge alot for somethings.
I would hate to see what a machine shop would charge to grind on a block for 12 hours to get the crank and rods to fit. Grind block so a damn high dollar jesel will fit etc

Most of my stuff matches what you said except the exotics - like the heads, intake, and belt drive. Hans' bill was 1800 for the machine work on all new parts :(
I did the assembly, which took forever. The lifters hit the block on #1, The billet timing chane ass'y hit the front of the block above the main cap, there was no place for the oil pump pickup to bolt to. The motor mounts hit the 1/4 NPT plugs in the side of the block, the Steffs pan didn't totally clear the front and rear caps, the oil pump didn't clear the main studs... the list goes on and on..

mikeb
11-15-2006, 11:01 PM
To answer the question i've got about $12k in parts sitting around and need another $4k or so to get to a running engine. Then when the turbo goes on there is another investment in building an adequite fuel system, blow thru carb, and putting a spool + axles into the rear to take the power. And a proper turbo converter.

That does not include previous investments already made in the rollcage, the rear end, and the transmission & driveshaft.

Performance is unknown but hoping for very deep in the 9's.

And I need a damn paint job. Had some comments made at a previous cruise :o

What you spend on a car and what it runs is pointless. As long as you happy and the money comes out of your bank account who gives a fuck what other people think.
Also I would like to see you buy or build a low 5 second car for 20,000.
You might be able to buy a used up peice of shit roadster or dragster than might run close to that at 1500 pounds but thats about itIf your on a budget & have a little labor help I think its possible to go mid-5's on about 6000.00.....time will tell....Got 2500.00 in it now & suspention is done, need a motor,it should not take too much @ 2500LBS w/driver....We will see...

When It runs I'd love to line up a motor / motor race.
