Out of curiosity, what brand were those studs? I had a friend's car do the exact same thing.
Glad you are alright.

I can promise you this, it's not the only one like that.
Yea, i'd think that fact that there are only four lugs has more to do with it than the brand. Just my opinion. That car was moving pretty good, I'd definitely step up to five and possibly do the 5/8" upgrade.

Well, most of the problem, is not the studs believe it or not - it's the tires. He switched to some freebie 30" X 9" radial slicks. That is just what that car needed. He kept stepping up the launch power and it was working great. It went faster than it ever has, until it shook the tires and popped the studs.
Rest assured, it's getting teh big studs, big axles, mini tub, and new wheel studs. Those damn radials are badass - but hard on parts!

It shocked the driver tire pretty bad. On about the 5 hit it sheared the lugs. I can guarentee the driver axle tube is bent now. If you want to check it out pull the rearend out and bring it to me. I also have another 8.8 housing laying around if needed.

Tire shake aside (which as Al pointed out will break anything) it seems to me that people making power at this level might consider the rear studs as an annual replacement item.

I change my wheel studs annualy on my car. The first cruise I attended in '03 was when my windsor was still N/A. I just got it running properly a week or so before the cruise. The rear end was bought 2nd hand, and had came out of a car that ran 8.5x in the quarter. I made about 6 passes (won the brackets :D) and drove home.
I notice that I had a lugnut missing when I got home. Then I noticed it was a complete STUD. A 3" long stud was gone. I bought new studs and tore it down to find that the studs were severly twisted and a few more on the LH side were fractured.
After that I changed them yearly. Later in the off season, I removed the rear end from the car to find all of the lower control arm bolts SEVERLY bent, so bad infact, that they had to be cut out of the car in order to get the lower control arms out of the car
5 speeds are HARD on parts - or they are when I drive them :D <a href='http://media.putfile.com/turbostang'>Click here to watch 'turbostang'</a>
(I love that video)
In order to prevent further damage from teh 5 speed, I had to drill the LCA bushings, holes in the rear end bracket, and the holes in the car out to a 1/2" bolt and put grade 8 bolts instead of the 12MM stuff they come with!

Brakes won't always stop you from hitting the guardrail when you only have 3 wheels on the car and 1 of them is passing you going down the track.
