Need help asap with Windows XP not loadng...

A blue screen comes up and it says unmountable_boot_volume.....
How can i fix it?
I dont have the XP cd to reformat nor can I since i have school work on my PC.

How cna it be fixed anybody help please?

i believe you have seen the blue screen of death. and i doubt you will be able to repair it. if you can whipe it and start over with windows it would tell you if it worst then that. i bet you need a new HD :o

Probably the safest bet would be to buy a new hard drive and install a clean copy of XP on it. Then mount the old drive and try to recover your files.

you can get it off :) but you will need a bootable cd. something like heirins boot cd or windows pe

windows pe is like the windows os but on a cd and runs off the cdrom. you should be able to access your data and get it off that way. ;)



but this is why you always back up. i tell users this all day everyday. :o

depends on how you buy it. dells come with it. and most of them do. best buy has os i know.

I'd suggest booting to recovery console and just try running fixmbr, but if you don't have the XP cd, that might prove difficult.

Bart's PE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) is great. I used it this weekend to recover some data off my dad's work laptop that wasn't booting into windows (no BSOD, no errors, just hanging up during boot. Dirty install didn't help, and after recovering data, it got stuck at 56% on a full format. So I've got Dell shipping out a new drive.)

But... you'll need the XP cd for that as well. And a working computer to install the pebuilder application.

So yeah, your best bet is buy an XP cd, and a new hdd. Install xp to the new drive, and see if you can access your old drive from the new installation, and backup your data before wiping that old drive.

What is the 2nd parameter for the Bugcheck...

When you see the BSOD you should see something like this:

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME 0x000000ED (1st parameter, 2nd Parameter, 3rd Parameter, 4th Parameter)

The second parameter (the numbers and letters inside the parenthesis) is the status code telling why the volume failed to mount. Can you get that stop code for me? I might be able to tell you what exactly happened. However, in most cases it is time to rebuild because the disk is dying or dead.
