Getting kinda excited about the trip. Me and my son are going up there to pretty much ride all day. Then head back in the evening. I figure once we get there, we will have close to 8 hrs of time to ride with some lunch breaks in there to. My son is counting down the days. :D

Now, if I can just get my trailer back from a friend that borrowed it last Friday, I will be all set.

I need help with the list of things to take. It's been along time since I have been on a motorcycle outing. (Let me know if I miss anything): Food and drinks are not on the necessity list

Tools
jug of water for washing
Chairs
Motorcycle, helmets , ect are a given
change of clothes
air pump
extra gas

Is there anything else that is a must ? TIA (this is the first motorcycle outing in 14 years)

You asked for a few things, and I gave you something that i've seen people forget and not have enough of.

If I had know you were just gonna let them bounce around then I wouldn't have mentioned it..... ;)

Yeah, I have some boots. I have not gotten any for my son though. But I was going to buy him some hiking boots for now. There is a lot of sand there. We will be staying out of the deep loose sand. I don't want to be hauled off with broken bones. :o

True, but I can not ride in sand for shit.(never have been able to) So I am most likely to bite the dust in it. When you're 42 years old, even the soft stuff can hurt. I am counting on this being a more of a joy riding expedition. I have not riden in 14 years. But I am looking forward to it. :)

just sit back on the seat and gas it, keep the weight off of the front tire

Gotcha, I was ok doing that. It was when I tried to turn in the sand that I got into trouble. My trailor is on it's way back to me. :D I was worried someone was going to steal it.

If you are riding fast pace stand up when entering a corner and hard on the brakes you will have more control over it. Just a quick tip.

riding gloves, and if you get a chance you may want to go buy an extra set of levers. you can get a clutch and brake for about $9.95 each. It's worth it, because you hate to cut a ride short because of a broken lever. If yo have bark busters then it's probably not so important.
When you get to Muenster, you should stop at Bayer's (I think that's the name - it's an Exxon on the left), they have some killer pastries and chicken taquitos.

Got the gloves. Pastries and Taquito's, now that is a good tip. To be honest on the brake levers............I have only broken one in all the years I rode. Now watch, I will break one now.

Man...........you talking about reality hitting you head on! I have not ridden in 14 years. :o I am tired and I was just putting all day. :D But I am on a dinosaur, I sure wish I had a newer lighter bike. :( But the bike did good. It has plenty of power.........just a little heavy. Inertia is a bitch. Add my weight to it and it is down right silly. It was good to get out. It was a good time. I would really like to upgrade to a 2000 or better to lighten up things and get a little more power. But mainly to lighten up things.

This was the first place since I have owned my bike that I could open it up to 5 th gear. It felt good. For an old bike it can yank the front tire up in 3rd gear no problem. But isn't that what a thumper racing big bore kit is all bout. :D

Local place has a 98 yamaha 400 4 stroke (what ever they are called now days?) for 1650.00 It sure looks appealing. Would that be a good deal for 1500.00 flat?

I have a buddy that picked up a honda XR400 .....1999 model for 1100.00 in mint conditon. Talking about a deal of a life time! He bought it last year and sold it this year for 2200.00

I would have to sell the dinosaur before I moved up. So I think I may put it up for sale. Just not sure I can sell such and ugly bike.

My family used to own all the land around that area up until the mid 50s (anything dennis would be my paternal grandmothers side of the family). Beautiful country, If you have the opportunity to camp out at Red River Motorcross, I would greatly suggest it. Also, the rock bluffs overlooking the river about a 1/2 mile down the trail where mountain creek empties into the river have hooks my great uncle (or something like that) put in for some fishing. I've caught a few 8lb catfish off there, and apparently back in the day my dad caught a 50lb catfish off there.

yeah real popular with teh cross country crowd. Good bikes, but also becasue they make all different sizes (125, 200, 250 (2 &4), 300, 450F, 525).

i would avoid that 400. they are still heavy ass bikes. You'll be wanting something lighter real quick.

watch this web site for some deals that should be popping up.
http://tccra.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=24
they are some good ones already. And before you think hell no those guys race the piss out of those bikes, I bet most of the bikes post will be much better maintained than the bike some guy puts up for sale, and says never raced. He probably rode on weekends, and put it up, dosen't clean the filter but once every 4-5 rides, and never takes it apart to grease. it.

here's some good ones. The YZ450F, is the last one before the aluminum frame. Only drawback is it may be a 4-speed:

THanks for the heads up. I thought the newer 4 strokes were made fairly light now days on aluminum frames? It has to beat the hell out of my steel frame bike.

I will be mainly doing easy riding and would prefer dependability. I am not a hard riding individual now days. It hurts when I fall. :o (old man)

hey, I know this guy. i know he maintains the bike pretty good. these YZ426 are still beasts, and kinda heavy, but if this is what you're looking for, it's a pretty good deal.

If you are just into trail riding and having fun then I suggest staying away from the 426 and 450. I would go with a nice newer 125 or 250F. Those bikes make great trail bikes. Light and nimble. The 426 is a heavy pig. Stay away from it. Mine weighed 270lbs with fuel. It sure had a nice torque curve though! My CRF450 is faster but way lighter.

You can find great deals on 125 2 strokes. Look at the classified forums over at www.texasoffroad.net.

I hear ya, but those are a tad to slow. I am a 235lb guy and will jump a mole hill every now and then. :D 125's are totally out of the question.

I will probably just keep what I got. It's heavy, but it has low end torque like a mutha. Just will not wind out like the new bikes.
