Wow! What a day. I'm tired, sore, and beaten down. I can't say enough about today's ride. After all that happened today, everything worked out OK and everybody made it home. Damn that beer at Hooter's hit the spot after what all happened on our last leg of the trip.

Anyway, where should I start?

The day started off good enough. You couldn't have asked for better weather today. When I left the house around 9:45am the temperatures were in the high 60's, low 70's. So when I arrive at the Connoco I'm one of the last arrive.

We actually left on time for a change. I'm leading the pack and quickly come across our first run in with the law. We hit up I-20 and as I'm moving the group over to the fast lane I come across an Arlington cop running a radar trap somewhere around 360. I saw him parked on the side and all I can think of was "why is this guy sticking his head out of the door when his car is broken down on the side of the highway?". As I get close I realize it's a cop and we catch our first break with the law that day. I was later told that as we flew passed him he put his radar gun down (not clocking us) cutting us some slack. I was doing at least 10mph over the speed limit, probably closer to 15mph.

After an hour and a half we made it to Whitney and to some breakfast at Montes, my favorite breakfast stop in this small town where my parents used to have a house. Temperatures have gone up while we've been inside grubbing. It's in the 80's I thought I saw somewhere (bank maybe?). We top off the tanks at an Exxon and 1fstcpe has to air up his front tire which was pretty low. While gassing up we see this cool old truck.

Our pace leaving Whitney was a sign of things to come. With light traffic we quickly make up for lost time

And then there were 6. Our group of 7 riders are now reduced to 6 after 1fstcpe started having a problem with the bike and he turns around and heads home roughly 95 miles into the trip. We part ways in Meridian and we continue on.

After 1fstcpe took off back home we continue on to Cranfields Gap and Hamilton where we make our turn south and head down 281 for Lampasas. From Meridian to Hamilton we pick up the pace a little more and come under attack by butterflies  Helmets and bikes alike are covered with bug splatters and we make a stop in Cranfields Gap to clean things up.

Heading south on 281 I pick up an unwanted passenger. I don't know how he got up there but somehow I sucked in a butterfly into my helmet and the little guy was fluttering around inside for about 2 or 3 minutes before he stopped moving and I'm stuck with him for the next 40 miles.

All of us finally gas up in Lampasas, fully filling up our tanks for the first time since leaving this morning. The stop in Whitney only topped off our tanks. I was pretty low at this point and welcomed the stop in Lampasas to stretch out, get a drink, smoke a cigarette, and fill up the tank.

We stop for lunch in Kileen around 4pm after being on the road almost 6 hours. We thought about hitting up Hooter's but decided on Boston's after deciding to make Hooter's our last stop once we make it back to Dallas. Our lunch break would take roughly an hour and we hit the road again. Another group of riders had shown up while we were inside and parked next to us. We stopped to check out there bikes and to look at OC's 'Busa and ram57ta's Blackbird covered in dead bugs.

After leaving Kileen we hit the highway to make up some time and get back to Dallas. This "rush" plays a major factor in what is to come. We hit 35 with some vigor and start picking our way through traffic. I don't know about you but nothing pisses me off more than someone that's not paying attention to what the hell they are doing while driving and we see this over and over again while riding up 35.

We did some of the best group riding I've ever had the pleasure of being a part of. That comment might sound gay but I don't know of a better way to explain it. We kept our group staggered and when we changed lanes, went around cars, or changed positions we kept this staggered line which kept us out of each other's way but allowed us to ride fairly close to each other.

We roll past Waco and finally stop in West, TX and gas up at a little gas station which also happens to be the home of the Little Czech Bakery. I didn't know we would be stopping here but every chance I go through here I always make it a point to stop and by some munchies.

stephen4785 parted ways with us where I-35W splits from I-35E and we continue on past Hillsboro, Italy, and finally Waxahachie where this story gets interesting. One of the guys in the group warned us about speed traps along this area and I knew of them to. But we were tired and ready to get back into Dallas. When we get into Waxahachie the back of my bike gets bathed in a sea of blue and red lights. Frankly it scared the shit out of me  I wasn't expecting it and it all happened so fast. The DPS trooper zipps around me after coming from god knows where and goes after the front of the group. Fuck it, I exit the highway and figured I'd wait and see what happens.

I don't see OC or ram57ta so I can only assume there in front of the trooper. ScottJ and 4DRSS are parked just past the on ramp in front of me and I decided I better see this one through rather than escaping down the service road and suffering any repercussions that might happen later. I'm not sure if I would have gotten away or not but I know that if I joined everybody down there on the highway I was getting a ticket or going to jail.

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g312/ms_rules/2006_1007/DSC00770.jpg

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g312/ms_rules/2006_1007/DSC00771.jpg

http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g312/ms_rules/2006_1007/DSC00772.jpg

So I pull up with ScottJ and 4DRSS and await whatever happens. The trooper comes up to us and asks for license and insurance. He asks me if I'm the guy the pulled off the highway and I say yes. He tells me that he caught me doing 79mph and he was going to write me a speeding ticket but said that if I got one he would have to give everybody else one. I was at the end of the pack and everyone else in front of me was going at least that fast if not faster. So he tells us it wouldn't be fair that I be the only one getting a ticket so he's going to give us all warnings.

WOW! I was freaking out about the coming speeding ticket and now I'm relaxed and thinking what an ending to a great day of riding. We had been riding hard and fast and get caught and are be let go with a warning! So he takes our stuff and heads back to his car.

So I'm snapping these pictures and thinking that it's to dark for them to show properly when everything around me gets lit up again. This time instead of red and blues I got some nice white light. I didn't want to use my flash because it might piss off the troopers (and I sure as hell didn't want to do that at this point) and now I've got this nice bright white light so I snap another picture. I turn around after snapping my last picture of the night to see another police car. In fact there are 2 or 3 police cars behind us  I'm told by Waxahachie's finest that they don't find my picture taking amusing and tell me to put it away. I had a couple of choice words with them but put the camera away.

We got off extremely lucky. Considering how we had been riding from Kileen getting stopped wasn't to surprising. OC or ram57ta mentioned that the troopers said that someone called in about us and reporting our driving. We probably pissed off a lot people on our jaunt back up 35 on our way home. They pissed me off as well. I wish I knew who called us in. I'm sure I would have remembered who they were

Well it's late and I'm tired and going to bed. Hope you enjoyed my little story.

Nice ride, story and pictures. I'm taking the Harley down to Boerne on Friday to see my roommates daughter and grandson and coming back on Sunday. Hopefully the weather will cooperate although it's supposed to be chilly on the return. Thanks for posting and keep the rubber side down.

it is a good thing that i left yall then, as I have no idea where my bosses insurance was for that bike and would have for sure gotten a ticket for no insurance and prolly for no inspection on that bike too. I am ordering my chain and sprockets this week for my bike and if i have to will take my carbs and new carb parts somewhere to have them rebuilt and resynced so that I can get my bike back on the road sooner than was expected. I dont really want to wait for 3-4 weeks for my boss to get back to rebuild the damn things.

Well I followed thru with what I said at Hooters. I got home after carrying some beer from the gas station to the casa. I then spent the next hour and a half cleaning MOST of the dead killer butterflies off my bike while putting down a few cold ones. Good Recap Jose...couldnt of said it better myself.

I probably would have gotten at least 2 tickets-no inspection, No motorcycle license.
Not to mention that the state troopers would probably remember me from my last endeavor with them  .
I figured there were alot of people that called in on us but Ellis county gets all excited when theres bikes involved becasue they normally run.Gives them fat bastards something to talk about/do.

I felt pretty worn out last night, but this morning was good. Good indication I could ride that far in 1 direction, then do it again a second or maybe 3rd day

Great recap Jose, lots of good shots!

I wasn't to bad last night, I probably could have gone easily another 100 miles or so as long as we made a stop to stretch out. Today I'm a little sore. Forearm muscles and (gulp) crotch are a little sore from the riding but surprisingly my back and legs weren't hurting at all today. So I think I would have been allright for more riding if we had done a longer trip like say a 2 or 3 day ride.

So what are you guys thinking for the next trip? I'm ready and wouldn't mind an overnight trip either if we plan things out ahead of time.

Well one thing that comes to mind is this lake I fish at in East Texas by my cousins home town. They rent these little cabins with two bunk beds, electricty, water, A/C and heating for like $35. I've rode my bike to his house once last year and the roads out to this lake are amazing as far as scenery but nothing real technical as far as curves or anything (I'd have to do some searching on that). Anyway, it's a bike trip I've always wanted to do with some friends. The lakes name is Martin Lake if anyone wants to look it up.

San Antonio would be another nice trip as well and 281 is a hell of a lot better further south than what we saw IMO. A trip out to the Gulf Coast would be something I'd like to do as well. Anyway, just throwing things out there.

to be honest, it is the least aeuro (sp) dynamic bike i have ever ridden. When i hit 80-90 the bike seemed so unstable at those speeds. that was the reason I left when i did. I did not want to slow anyone up and have to ride a slower pace because of me. If it were me I would never buy one of those bikes unless I just like to cruise around town and act a fool doing wheelies, endos, etc etc, but I like the long rides like the Dublin ride and would have loved to stay on this one but not on that bike. When i get my 93 gixxer back up and running ill ride anywhere and everywhere. It is prolly as comfy as the busa just because of how it sits and the seat is a lot softer than most of the bikes out there.

Cool, I was just curious because most of the other bikes out there were sport bikes and the ZRX is a very upright type bike. But that is what I am looking for, don't think I am cut out for the crotch rocket style bike. No wheelies either though. :o

You know when we got to Lampasas, we were only 120-130 mile to San Antonio and only 40 miles to Marble Falls which I think has the best section of 281. When are you guys talking about doing this? I just checked out Streets & Trips and from the Conoco to Hamilton, down 281, to San Antonio is roughly 277 miles.
