'Puter gurus, I need some help. My neighbors power supply took a shit, so he got another one. Now the damn thing won't fully boot.

It does the usual testing at power up and gets to the XP load screen then re-boots itself.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe the dust that killed the power supply is making the processor over heat?

if a PSU goes out, it can surge and take anything in the computer with it.

Lots of times it'll scatter some bits on the hd. Best thing to do is get a utility disc and run a good disk scan, looking for and fixing any bad spots.

I've also had a ps take out a board/cpu with it

I had a firewall PS die, and smoke the memory, mb and cpu. But in this instance, it partially boots and fails during the Windows load - so my guess is some data corruption due to jitter at the time that the system surged.

Well, we ended up reformatting and starting fresh. It seems to work better now than it did in the first place.

Thanks for the help yall. :D

Yes sir, the old one wasn't but a 350w. The new one is a 450w. I tell you what, Tran Computer is the shit when you need parts. Their pricing is hard to beat locally.

BTW, the 'puter is an oldie, a P4 1.6 runnin' XP w/ a whole 256 stick.

Ah damn, I missed this post anyway. Yeah, pretty lucky and typically a reload of an OS that has been on awhile does yield good results. Sorry for my worthless post, after the fact. ;)
