fwiw, here's a review by a member of a nerd messageboard I'm on:

I'll make this short and sweet (since I wanna get back to playing it).

Shadow of the Colossus is a game by the people who made ICO, and it takes place in the same world AFAIK. You play a young man (looks about 25 or so) whose task is to take down all the Colossuses (sp?) in the game. For those who played ICO, this game is radically different gameplay wise, but shares the same artistic beauty that made ICO such a sleeper hit. Rather than running through castles and such solving puzzles and climbing walls, you ride your horse through an INCREDIBLY vast world looking for giants to destroy. The giants are quite varied, ranging from large bipedal monstrosities, to flying dragons, to underwater leviathans. The basic idea behind the gameplay is pretty simple, figure out how to destroy the Colossus. Each colossus has a weakpoint (or several of them) which you can find using your trusty magic sword (which focuses sunlight on the weakness). Then you have to find a way to climb up the colossus and stab the weakpoint a bunch of times.

Anyway onto some PCAccelerator type reviews:

Good:
+ David vs Goliath goodness of a little guy taking down a huge giant
+ Movement of the character, horse, giants, etc is just awesome
+ Camera angles are actually pretty decent for a 3rd person game
+ Options for 16 by 9 Progressive Scan

Bad:
- Game suffers a bit by the being limited by PS2 hardware. Graphics are pretty pixelated and textures are a bit blurry. They still managed to make the game beautiful tho.

I beat it just to say I did. Not the most interesting game I've ever played, but I just felt obligated to beat it. It's pretty cool, but there's not much of a story. I have a feeling alot of average gamers hate it.

Thanks for the replies guys. Maybe if I can find it for under $20, I'll get it. Is a strategy guide necessary to get the fullness out of the game?
