I am planning on adding some bass to my daily driver (2000 GMC sonoma) and was needing an opinion... First of all I want to stick with Jl audio for the sub or subs. In my last truck I had 2- 10w3v2 subs each powered by a class D 250w amp. These were plenty loud for me and I would never want anything louder than this. I haev been looking around and haev been thinking abotu buying another set of the same subs. I will have to build a box for my truck and since it is a single cab I would have to remove the jack etc... from behind the passenger seat which I really do not want to do since I have no where else to keep it and it is important to have around since I just had a flat this week. So I was looking at maybe just adding a single 8w7 behind my seat in a ported enclosure with a 250 jl amp pushing it. Is this going to sound wimpy or will it still be able to make some real noise? I have no exp. with this sub and am looking for some personal reviews...

that s-10 have a bed? sounds like a good place for a jack... especially if you have a cover for the bed....
A single 8" woofer in a ported box in your truck should be able to hit 130db pretty easily. Not exactly earth shattering but loud enough to keep up with pretty much any normal listening volume from the front stage. It won't sound like a pair of 10s by any means but it's plenty loud for sound quality.
You might be better off investing in a good set of component speakers though. I've got Diamond D971s (7" woofer) in the doors of my Sonoma and they can do just fine without subs if you throw enough power at them. Not cheap by any means but they sound really nice:) For subs though I've got 3 12s and an XS-100 pushing them, more of an SPL vehicle than SQ.

jl makes a stealth box for your truck its made to keep the jack and tune for the truck it self. i have put alot of stealth boxes and have never been dissapointed with them at all. it might be a little more expensive but it will do everything you want it to do.

I had planned on going with a set of componets in the door panels in the future. I was looking at a set of the focal k2 poly kevlars. I still want a little more bass though and a NICE single 8" woofer will do the trick. I am going to order the JL 8w7 and the JL 250/1 and build my own slot ported box. I may post pics when done.

Hmm, I have been reading alot about building boxes with slot ports. JL gives all the specs for a nice box as far as how much cube Ft. ect... On the JL site it says that the sealed box will sound better but the ported box will be a little louder AND still sound great if the slot port is tuned to the right Hz. I am kind of stumped here. I know that I can build either box. I want very good sound quality but still want it to be loud. Do you think that the sealed version will hurt the volume much? It says that there is about a 3-4db seperation.

a single 10w3 on that amp in a slot ported box would sound great in that truck. an 8? It might be sufficient, but it's not likely.

Ported enclosures are more efficient than sealed ones. More volume with less power. The bad side is that they are not quite as clean sounding as sealed enclosures, less power handling, great output only around the port tuning frequency, and alot larger box. With a vented enclosure the speaker moves a bit slower giving it a dragging boomy sound. Sealed boxes are the way to go for overall. And I have built many 2-10" enclosures for s-10's without moving the jack. The box actually extends over the top of the jack but you need shallow small enlosure subs (JL) and a compact amp to fit under the seat.
Just make sure you have a subsonic filter somewhere with a ported box. Playing notes lower than the tuned frequency of the port = destroyed woofer. I use an Audio Control 3.1 for this as well as it's voltage increase and pre-amp capabilities.

Yes, I left that out the subsonic filter part but that is very important on a ported enclosure if you don't want to kill your subs and W7's aren't cheap! Also keep in mind, larger cone area + the speaker's excursion= more air pressure and basically more volume.

doh, I guess I'm stupid, for some reason I thought it was an 8w3.

I've got some like new K2s in a box with tweeters and crossovers... I'll let them go for $550. They are $800 new and the K2Ps are a grand now... I think these have about 10 hours on them.

I can get them for that price new from ebay. Now if you want to really make me a deal on those I may be interested, I would love to have them I just can not buy them used for the price that I could get them new for.

if some can make a box to fit a w7 behind the seat of a reg cab s10, i will never say another word about car audio, lol.(bed cuts dont count)
if you can deal with 2 10s in sealed box will be the way to go. ported box are crap, only good for one thing and thats to get loud. if your a bass head go with a ported box, if not sealed all the way.
does your truck have bench or bucket seats, if it has bucket make the box your center console and you can flare it out a little behinde the seats, and face the sub towards the wall(will have sound deaden) i have built one like this and put one 12 :)

Interesting, I can't recall the last time I've seen a 1000$ home audio subwoofer in a sealed box. care to rethink your statement since it was likely founded upon poorly designed boxes and/ or poorly selected subwoofers?

I have weird bucket seats they are factory 60/40 split buckets with the center console integrated with the drivers seat. I already have the design planned out for the speaker it will be a single 8w7 in a sealed box that will wind up facing he passenger side. I will post pics when I am done with the build.
