I have a HP laptop (HP Compaw nc8200) with built in wireless card and for 4 months it was working fine and I was installing some upgrades and restarted and now under Network Connections it has the little pic of the computer with the wireless card name and all but has an X on it.. Everything is enabled and my wireless button is on but it says wireless connection not connected  .. drivers and everything are installed.. any suggestions??

Check device manager to see what's going on there? Maybe do a scan for hardware changes just in case something got hosed after the updates.

Are you sure the toggle switch for the wireless card is ON? Most people some how switch it off and freak out.

i would go into the device manager and if there aint anything in there, then go loook for some newer updates. or even find a forum where people are having the same problem

in the "Run" dialog box, type in cmd

When the command box opens type in "ping 127.0.0.1" without the "s and see if it goes through. If it does, it's probably an error in the network settings (SSID, WEP key, Channel, something to that affect), if it doesn't go through, there's an issue with the drivers and/or card. 127.0.0.1 is called a loopback address and pinging it will tell you whether or not your computer is communicating with the wireless card. If you have a regular ethernet port on the laptop as well, you may need to check the connection settings and see if it's set to use the wired card. Try hooking up with an ethernet cable and see if you get throughput.

Most HP laptops have a button or switch that you can manually turn off the wireless card.
