You will save money on purchase going with a 600, but if you can afford both and can take the time and progress slowly instead of hopping o and thinking your a bad ass then you will be fine. Wear your gear and take a class. I stress wear your gear and be safe man. Good Shopping

There will be more comments on this!!

Can we have a few "old" hands like myself and others post our reccomendations/opinions and make a sticky about it?

This thread topic seems to come up every few weeks.

I'm keeping this one short.
If you want to progress faster as a rider, start on a slower bike. ANY late-model SS is more bike than you should get.

If it's more about image than wanting to learn to really love the hobby, get a YZF600 (not R6) or an F4i. More than enough for a beginner and both have very forgiving chassis.

If you are insecure get a new jap litre.

If you are really insecure and think you've got a tiny cock, get a turbo'd, bottl'd, ZX-14. Never learn to handle the thing, get used to it's straightline speed, sell it in 6 mos when you get bored.

If we do make some sort of sticky, I'll type something indepth, not that crap I just posted above.

Well, I will put in my two cent's. I bought a 03 SV650S two year's ago my first bike. Before I even really look at bikes. I took my Motorcycle safety class first to see if it was even for me. That class was a great eye opener for me and I learned ALOT from that class.

Second your gear: I only use a Snell and D.O.T Helmet. I alway's wear full leather's except for jean's. Boot's,jacket, and glove's

I think you should start with a little smaller bike then a 600 sport bike.

This is a quote off of Suzuki's Website
The Suzuki GSX-Rs are engineered for experienced riders.

Some people might call me a puss but if your new to motorcycle's I would get some time under your belt before jumping into the sport bike's as they can be very dangerous. Look into a SV650S mine has 4600 miles on it now and never gave me one problem. They still have plenty of power to move down the road faster then most cars.

Find a CBR600 F3 or F4i. Perfect starter bike that will run with the newest 600's for less than half the price, parts are abundant for when you drop it in your driveway, and because they are getting older they wont get stolen the first time you park it somewhere. Dont spend much more than 3 grand on your first bike because the first time you scratch that shiny new 10 thousand dollar 600 you will hate yourself. Get something to learn on first, take care of it and make your mistakes on that one...then when you are a better rider get something newer and more expensive.

Man get what you want don't let someone talk you into getting something you don't. If your just going to be cruising the streets and have no intention of doing 100+ then i'm sure you will be fine on what ever you decide. If you want a sport bike get a sport bike, just don't go out trying to show off. Ride at your own pace. From what you are saying if you like the GSXR's then go with a used 600 like '01-'02 that way you get it for cheap and it doesn't really matter if you drop it in the driveway. My opinion you will never be able to put all the power of that 600 on the ground none stop.

Bottom line Get what you want not what some guy on any web site says you should get. Just be smart about it....take a course, wear all your gear at all times and watch out for everyone on the road. See you on the road :)

I don't think having a warrenty that last what? 6mo-1yr is going to be worth the $5,000 or more you would save with going for a used bike. Not to mention the cost of Insurance on the new over the used. Just my .02 cents

NO, it is not the best beginner's bike. You have your mind made up, so go ahead and make your purchase, they are a great motorcycle, but don't deceive yourself. Buying a brand new bike for a first motorcycle isn't the smartest thing in the world to do, buying a new 600 sportbike, also isn't the smartest thing to do. Sit on them, ride them if possible, you will likely find out that certain bikes are more comfortable to you.

It's your call buddy, but statements like that don't give you much credibility.

I wouldn't buy a new one. I've had a friend of mine wreck his with just a couple thousand miles on it pretty good and it pretty much killed the value on it and now can't get rid of it for how much he owes on it.

I bought a used bike as my first, for learning. I picked up a used 2003 Katana 600.
It's the bike everyone on here says sucks, and it basically does :)

BUT it was dirt cheap and serves well for a beginner. I've been riding it about
5 months. So far I dropped it once in a parking lot, and once on sandy pavement
in a turn. Luckily only picked up a hip bruise since I had on all my gear.

I took the motorcycle safety course and it was worth doing.

I've had a few close calls from other drivers almost squashing me, either pulling
out in front of me or changing lanes while I'm in the lane.

After the last 5 months, I'm very glad to have started with a used and cheap bike.
It was priced at a point where I can learn on it and resell it for basically the same
price. So, I'll sell it and upgrade into a better bike when I'm ready.

i have to agree with everyone on here, i would not do the brand new bike as the first, i started out on a 98 cbr 900( but i'm a little bigger guy) learned a lot on it. then moved up to the 02 r1 rode it for a while and learned even more, now up to the 05 duc 999, and it is a great bike. just take it slow man, and ALWAYS wear your gear!! it's not if it is when!, have fun and see you out on the road

First sport bike for me was an F3. It was good enough, but after 2 years I got the R1. I have been riding for 20 years and 10 of them on the streets. Take it slow, wear your gear and watch out for the non lookers.

My first sportbike was/is an '06 R6, and I'm already wanting an R1. I like the flickability of the lighter bike, but 130 horses just isn't enough to haul around my 200lb ass. My number one suggestion would be to buy used, especially as a beginner. You won't know exactly what you want to ride until you've got the experience to know how you ride. Don't get me wrong, the 600's out today are no slouches, and will dip into the 10's with the right rider, but you have to spin the shit out of the motor to get there. There are plenty of riders out there that prefer the smaller and lighter bike, and I love riding mine, but the street is no place to push them to there cornering capabilities.

Kyle, the saying isn't to proclaim that you will drop your first bike, it is that in a rider's lifetime, he will meet the pavement at least once, unfortunately.

i like the black with the yellow its a 750 but ive seen used ones in 600 thats really the only reason. Im just going to getb the best bike for the money should have a bike in less than 3 weeks

just get a good cheap starter bike, the good thing about those bikes is you buy it used, ride it for a while, and when you want to sell it there are always plenty of people looking for a starter bike. As long as you don't wreck it, you will get what you paid for it pretty easily.

You should really get a used bike, My first and only bike was a CBR F2 and I Dropped it a couple of times(once in the drive and once on a gravel road)...I would have been very mad at myself if it would have been the bike I was going to get (new F4)...You are going to be really pissed when you drop your Brand new Bike, It will happen unless you are just really lucky

good, most people that like "gixxers" only like them for that reason, because they have a nifty nickname. If you are buying for looks, they are very good looking bikes, at least you arent going into it for the wrong reason

Yep that is pretty much where I am with mine right now. I started on a 2002 Suzuki GS500e. It is a really fun bike but I am already starting to out grow it. It looks like I should be able to sell it for what I got for it too.

My vote is for the SV650, but you can go the really cheap route and get a Lifan Sportbike or a Ninja 250. Get used to riding on normal roads then upgrade to a more powerful bike.

The ZX-14 is much bigger, that should make for a good first bike ;)
