View Full Version : Who saw the story last night about the abandoned convoy in Iraq?

inline 6

The one where the one truck was overturned and the other guys broke down. Then the convoy escorts just left them there to deal with it. The one survivor filmed it on a camcorder...

Anyone have a link to this video?

From what I saw these guys were going to deliver supplies and the escorts made a wrong turn. Unknowingly they were going down a dead end road and being pelted by rocks and random gun fire. When they turned around the people had already set up on them knowing that they had to come back through and a bomb caused the first truck to tunr over on its side. The man and his wife that were driving (who survived the wreck) were drug out and shot then stripped and beat some more. The guy is the second truck (who's truck was disabled) filmed it all. When the escorts started to leave he got on the CB and was pleading for them to come back. This was all before the other people were killed. He took 2 rounds to the arm but survived for another 45 minutes before somebody came back to get him.

I saw that last night, it was pretty messed up how they just left them there to die. They were calling them to come back and get them out of there and they just left them. That would be a sick ass feeling sitting there waiting to be the next to die. SCREWED UPFF

This is the first that I've heard of the incident. Why did the troops just leave them? Isn't that why they have military escorts? In the event that something like this happens?

WTF??

The camera man/driver of the truck who survived said towards the end he was at peace with god and prepared to die and then the helicopter gun ships flew overhead and the rebels retreated. I can't imagine the feeling that overcame him at that moment; facing death and the next thing you know he was safe. That would be gut wrenching to be in that position. On top of the whole mess the subsitiary(sp?) of Halliburton who employed him, fired him a couple months later for being injured on the job.

I don't see why the military escorts who looked to have 50 cal. guns equiped on their vehicles didn't mow down anything in their site at that time?

You know, I watched the video on here, was disturbed, posted, went to lunch and watched people. I sat there and watched how 1/2 the people were on cellphones or texting, worried about what came on their burger, laughing at dumbass jokes told at the table, getting mad because the line was long, trying to find a parking spot, etc.

I just gotta say, thank God we took the fight over there!!! If shit went down like it is in Iraq, 90% of our population wouldn't know what the fuck to do with themselves. Most of you would sit there, frozen, while you soiled yourselves, the rest would run in panic. I don't know how many people would react in a manner of protection/survival, but I know it can't be a lot. If shit ever goes down here, there's not going to be enough resources/responders available to everyone, which will start yet another panic. Sometimes I just want to stand in a crowded public area and scream from the top of my lungs, "What the fuck is wrong with you people?!?!" This nation is just a bunch of cocksuckers that are blind to what's really going on in the world. Most of the population would be worthless crap if ever called upon in a time of need... and you know what? Fuck them. Fuck all those human speed bumps that would have nothing to offer but a whine and more problems to deal with. This isn't just directed at certain people, but everyone in general when I say you need to get your minds' straight and always be ready for anything. It's not just penny stocks and Tickle Me Elmos out there and it won't be here forever either. Sometimes I really hate our fucking society...

I had forgot about the fact that Halliburton fired the guy later for getting injured. Also I read that Halliburton forbids the drivers to carry any sort of firearm. THAT is F'ed up to me as well.

Denny, I think more people that you imagine feel the same way. I look around everyday and see tons of worthless piles of walking shit that would probly rather take advantage of the situation by looting than doing anything to help if a something ever came down. I just do not understand how things like this happen (with the trucks) I want to give the service guys the benefit of the doubt on that one but it really looks like they got scared and only took care of themselves. I cant imagine joining the service and then taking a position like that when someone needed my help and I was the only one who could provide it.

Or maybe one of those girls with Daddy's cedit card down at the mall, tring to get every name brand jean into her closet. How about one of those engineers, take their building plans out from under their arm and insert a rifle there. Most would turn their head before pulling the trigger, if they got the nerve. I wouldn't even want to think about any of them in a hand to hand confrontation. or killing their own meal.

I saw it last night, very disturbing, death was at that guys door as he watched the lead trucker get yanked out and shot, and then the following trucker get shot, he was next. I don't know how he survived in that truck for another 40 minutes knowing he is probably next.

His truck had broken down so there was no mowing over anyone, he was totally stranded to watch these men act like animals. Hopefully the government can compensate this guy for stranding him to be left for dead in a crappy situation. The story said that Halliburton does not supply maps for the truckers, but apparently this was known before going in. It seemed like the government wanted to hush hush the situation saying they lost documents for a full investigation. Sad story.

Having been there, and seen the kind of people that take on that type of job, can you really imagine anyone actually sitting there waiting to die?

I mean, I can't think of ANYTHING that would make me not defend myself in a "me or them" situation... especially my job.

No, we all had an "understanding" about what to do if it ever came down to it. There were several, believe it or not, that probably would just sit and wait, though. I chose to distance myself from them. I just don't see how they let some of those people out there in the first place. We had old ladies working out there, doing some admin/accounting type shit. We had people so overweight, that we had to fabricate a vest from two flack jackets. We hired and brought out people with disabilities that would prevent them from even breaking into a brisk walk.

No we do not run ops like that, we are here to transfer to power over to the ISF and IA not ambush the insurgents and the unit that conducted that convoy was an Amry unit not trashing the army or anything but i have yet to see shit like that for the Marine Corps out here, and for the most part the KBR drivers out here are pretty safe and they have new up armored trucks now so thats even better. Yeah this incident sucked but the media does blow things out of the water, and hell this video has been out for a while over here in Iraq they just havent realesed it for a while. You can ask most KBR drivers that when they are rolling with us out there they feel pretty safe and beside these are called escort missions not combat operations and raids on insurgents.

Everybody has their own opinions on army, marines, whatever. I am a warrant officer Apache Helicopter pilot in the army and i can tell you i would never leave anybody i was there to defend. I dont know about Halliburton, but WE do run convoy ambush tactics and training. I dont know exactly what happened with those escorts because i wasnt there, but i can tell you that you will never see an apache leave a fight. I have friends that have taken rpg's to one of their engines and still stayed until they were out of ammo. We take our job very seriously. I take others lives in my protection VERY FUCKING SERIOUSLY. And every pilot i have trained with and flown with feels exactly the same way. If it were up to me i would be there to escort all the convoys, but the army doesnt want to spend that kind of money. And dont think its just because i'm in a gunship either. I was a ground pounder for the first 4 years of my service in the army, i'm not ever going to just give up or run away. If i run out of bullets i always have a knife, if i lose my knife i will throw rocks right back at those mother fuckers.

No missions were ran like that that I know of. Both the military and Halliburton were so stretched on manpower for the convoys, they had to concentrate on the original mission; to get supplies where they're needed. They have stepped up military support for the convoys, though. It used to be one military apparatus between every 5 civilian vehicles in a convoy to a 3:1 ratio.

I wouldn't give a bucket of piss for every sub human in Iraq. I really couldn't care less if they all just fucking died and rotted away in the desert. I'd sleep just fine...

I used to have the exact opposite opinion about the people of Iraq before I went and through most of my time in country. Like I stated many times before, most of the population of Iraq wants us there. They're thankful for us putting and end to Saddam's reign and they want us to get rid of the ones still causing problems. However, they couldn't care less about our well-being, they just want us to get the job done at any expense to ourselves and get the hell out of the country when it's over, never to return. So you have two types of people out there, basically. One that doesn't want you there in the first place and will try to kill you any way possible, the other that only wants you there to fix their "problems" but other than that doesn't want you around and couldn't care less if you died after you helped them. Now my thoughts are exactly inline with yours. Unfortunately, leaving anytime soon will create absolute chaos in that part of the world. If the Iraqis don't destroy themselves in our absence, then one of their neighboring countries like Syria or Iran certianlly will. Their military is half-staffed and half-trained. Their weaponry consists of guns, rifles and a few vehicles, nothing more, really. Their government is weak. Their police force is next to nothing. I couldn't see us pulling out any less than 12 years from now. Our children will be patching up the country near the end of our time there (if we're lucky to finish that fast). But I really don't ever see Iraq getting better enough to pull out by standards that we want them to meet. I never see them making anything for themselves. They have more drama than a dfwstangs "who fucked who" thread. It might not ever gett good enough over there for politics to pull our people out. It might take a war within a war to do something like that. We won't ever have another pull-out like Viet Nam, that's for sure. I'm not saying this is anything like Viet Nam, because it's not. We've already accomplished more in Iraq than 20 Viet Nams. We've had more success than failures in Iraq, but we just don't have a finished product that uneducated, uninformed, unrealistic people wanted in just a few year's time. The initial purpose was a good idea and a success, but I don't think anyone ever thought we'd run into the resistance in the aftermath that we have now.

Do it over again? Absolutely!

Different goals? Definately.

Different tactics? Yes on some, no on others.

Pull our people now? Only to level that part of the world, then I'm OK with it. We need to start a "pull and push" campaign. Pull our people and push the button. LOL!

It sounds like a manpower problem. What a bunch of fucking bullshit.
There will never be enough manpower to get pieces of shit like these to conform.

A model or Longbow?

Well, since Halliburton doesn't have one armed person in country, I would guess the same for them ;)

I couldn't see us pulling out any less than 12 years from now.

If that's the case, I won't be in the military much longer. I don't mind deploying, but I refuse to deploy for 12 years of my life. No thanks.

Have you ever been here? If so i dont know who you roll out with but i know when i roll we have more than enough to handle any situation, and trust me we get in them all the time, yeah we might get a couple of WIA or KIAs but we have yet to be over ran in a fire fight or supprise attack, and if one might be able to argue this it would be me sense i am here and im an 02 Intell.

He's saying enough to be dedicated to go on an offensive in the form of decoy convoys.
