How do you clean the headlights when they get hazy looking? I've heard of wetsanding but I'd like to know the process before I venture that route........thanks

I can help you out with this, I manage a paint and body shop in FLower Mound, TX.

I would not reccomend wet sanding them becuase it never seems to do a whole lot of good. At least none that I have experienced.

The best thing to do is to go to O'reilly's and get "buffing compound." I do not know if they sell it this particular brand, but I would reccomend the "3M Perfect-It 3000." If they carry another brand, please make sure that it is water based. Petroleum based compound is very difficult to remove once it dries. Also purchase a package of "wypalls." Put a little bit of compund on the headlight and hand rub it in using the wypall.

If that does not get you any significant results, than your only other option is to replace them.

yes we sell 3m perfect-it compounds. most of the stores have to order them. we also sell a kit made by permatex i believe. It is made for cleaning hazy headlights. I can get you a part number tomorrow if you would like. I work at the oreillys across from USA.

do you apply these compounds to the inside or outside of the lens?

Replacing them wasn't an option on my '87 Tbird, so we polished them. They did look better but the reflective surface INSIDE the light was also damaged.

If you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend just replacing them. Buy a few extra OEM sets if you can, for any future cars you might own too. It's good to get them while they're actually available. ;)

I wrote the number down but forgot to bring it home. Here is what I was talking about though...

Permatex Kit (http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-Headlight-Lens-Restoration-Kit/dp/B000BUH23C)

Here is a better link to permatex' home page. It has the part number too.

The best kept secret to get yellow hazy lenses back to that new clear look is to clean them with BRAKE FLUID!

I'm serious. Try this first. Makes them look good as new. I learned this trick in Mexico. That's what they use at a shop I went to visit down there.

Pretty cool. Let me know how it comes out.

Just don't get any on the paint cuz you know what'll happen then. :D

My daily is a 99 Malibu with a lot of miles on it. The headlights were yellowed, felt rough, and real hazy. I took them off and used Mequires Scratch X (comes in a black tube) since it was all I had sitting around. It worked great and was easy to do by hand. That stuff is sold everywhere if you cannot find the other stuff mentioned.
