View Full Version : Soy Protein? Whey Protein?

I've finally lost the 20lbs. that needed to come off and I'm making the plunge back into the cardio and the Bowflex Monday morning. Years ago when staying lean wasn't a problem, I ate everything in sight and used Creatine serum. I'll be back on the serum and adding protein along with my controlled diet.

My caloric intake, carbs, fats, sodium, protein, sugars, cholesterol, etc, are actually being watched for once since 29 just isn't the same as 18. In choosing my protein, I went with GNC Mega Whey. Low calorie, low carb, low fat, high protein. What concerned me was the 80mg of cholesterol per serving in the whey opposed to no cholesterol in the soy. Granted the soy was only 25mg of protein per serving compared to the 60mg in the whey, should I really be worried about the amount of cholesterol in the whey?

Is that amount of cholesterol considered low or not the "bad" kind?

Any thoughts?

creatine serum is useless. creatine degrades in a liquid form far before you'd ever consume it.

I try to consume more whey protein than I do soy. I have read several studies that suggest possible hormone irregularities due to some of the soy proteins. Nothing conclusive or definitive, but I just stay away anyway.

I used the serum for 3 years from about 22-25 with great results. I experienced "textbook" muscle results using it. What information are you using to base your opinion? I'm very open to more beneficial solutions.

Soy protein promotes estrogen, stay away from it. As for whey protein I use Optimum Nutrition gold standard. Mixes easily with water and taste is bearable. You could also look into Muscle Milk brand its mixes well too and tastes great, but the calories are there to account for the great taste.

Thats why I stayed away from the Muscle Milk. More calories and carbs than I cared for. I would have to substitute it for a small meal which I don't want to do as I still have a good five pounds of fat to lose.

A number of sources have concluded that creatine is not stable in a liquid and will degrade to creatinine. just google and look.

Ninety percent creatine degradation was observed within 45 days for RT samples

Creatine serum supplements seem to have no effect on muscle ATP or creatine stores, despite claims by one US manufacturer, say researchers.

That one looks really good. Low calorie, very low sodium, no fat, no carbs, no cholesterol. Let me know how you like it. I may go for it after I finish the Pro Performance Mega Whey I have now.

I just got it in the mail today, tastes great with skim milk. Haven't tried it with water yet.

I went with chocolate, main reason is for mixing in instant pudding. A nice treat is to mix protein powder into fat free, sugar free instant pudding mix.

Cool. I've got about a week's supply left of what I have. Where did you end up getting it at?

Awesome site. I got my Dymatize order yesterday. I went with their chocolate Iso 100, glutamine, and creatine. The protein mixes awesome with just water and tastes great. I'm very satisfied with it.

updating with the article from bodybuilding.com about whey vs. soy protien

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drobson71.htm

the linked article (a case against soy) that bashes soy has no reference material newer than the late 80's.

this article lists research studies done as recent as 2005.

interesting stuff. sounds like soy might be worth trying.

Well since the thread was brought back, I'll give an update. Im 5'10" and weighed 195lbs and had just dropped 20lbs. when I started this thread. I'm now down to 167. I had a 38 waist, now a 32.

I decided not to take the creatine but I'm still using the Dymatize ISO 100 protein and their glutamine. I'm very satisfied with both products, but don't assume they played a huge role in the weightloss I achieved. That was done through diet, lifting, and lots of cardio. If anything the supplements have helped to keep me from losing muscle due to low calorie intake.

I still have a couple inches I'd like to lose in my gut and love handle area, but I'm still working on it. Once I'm happy with that, I plan on taking my diet in a different direction so I can start to pack on more muscle, as the calorie and carb content in my current diet comes no where near supporting what would be needed to achieve my muscular goals.
