Was reading in the paper that Big 12 games on average lasted 3 hours & 35 minutes(thanks Tech :D ) last season & officials wanted to cut that down.

Rule #1 on kickoffs, the clock starts when the ball is kicked rather than when it is fielded by the receiving team.

Rule #2 on changes of possesion, the clock will start when the ball is put in play rather than when it is snapped.

Officials believe this will resort in a dozen or so fewer plays during the game.

The kickoff rule will save time, but waiting until the ball is put into play to start the clock will do nothing more than waste time.

And cause delay of game.

you defiently won't be able to fuck around once the ball is layed down by the ref because the clock will be ticking, I imagine we see a bunch of delay of game penalties early on.

By put into play, I thought he meant, by when the QB releases the ball.

All of that will be eaten up by the new rule that allows coaches to throw a red flag on the field, ala NFL, to challenge plays through replay review.

no, once the ref puts the ball down on the field, the play clock starts. Old rule was when the ball was hiked.

I don't think it's as soon as it hits the grass, necessarily, but as soon as they blow the whistle and are walking away from it. I, too, think that it will cause a lot of confusion and possible delays of game early on. I would like some clarification on that if anyone knows for sure.

At first, I thought the kickoff rules and such were stupid, but I don't know enough about all the rules. I think if they don't affect the amount of time a team has to get set, run a play, etc, I don't care, like the new KO rules. If a game is going to be tight and down to the wire, it'll still be down to the wire, just a little sooner, teams will have a few less minutes to mount a comeback.

to clarify, on change of possesion, the ref sets the ball & blows the whistle, the play clock starts to roll. Old rule was the clock doesn't start until the team hikes the ball.
