Ousted Oklahoma Quarterback Finds New School

Quarterback Rhett Bomar, who was dismissed from the Oklahoma football team for receiving extra compensation from jobs at a private business, is transferring to Sam Houston State University, an N.C.A.A. Division I-AA program in Huntsville, Tex.

Bomar, 21, a redshirt sophomore, is expected to enroll today, people close to the situation said.

Sam Houston State, which has an enrollment of 15,300, is located 70 miles north of Houston and competes in the seven-team Southland Conference. Classes began Aug. 21.

Bomar did not answer a message left on his cellphone this morning. He was believed to also be considering Stephen F. Austin before choosing Sam Houston State.

Oklahoma Coach Bob Stoops dismissed Bomar and offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, both starters, on Aug. 2.

The university’s investigation revealed that they knowingly broke N.C.A.A. rules by being paid for work not performed at Big Red Sports/Imports, a car dealership in Norman, Okla.

Both players were declared ineligible by Oklahoma. J.D. Quinn will attend Montana, the university said today.

Sam Houston State will have to apply to the N.C.A.A. for Bomar to become eligible. That process would likely involve him repaying the money he improperly received from the dealership.

Last week, Bomar said he had yet to have any conversations with the N.C.A.A. about his eligibility. He could be suspended from games before being allowed to play at Sam Houston State. “You have to apply for reinstatement first and then you find something out some period after that,” he said in a telephone interview last week.

The nation’s top-rated quarterback recruit in 2004, Bomar started 11 games last season and set the single-season passing record for a freshman at Oklahoma with 2,018 yards.

He will join a Sam Houston State team that went 3-7 last season and finished second-to-last in the Southland with two conference victories. The Bearkats have four quarterbacks, including the Texas Tech transfer Phillip Daugherty, a junior, according to the team’s Web site.

Man, I hope he gets reinstated so Brian Robison can cut him in half yet again!

maybe you would want to put a bet on this? tool.I hope you're joking. I don't see why he didn't choose TCU, or somewhere else along those lines, that it would actually matter if he went there. I guess he's going for the image of the reformed sinner who is ready to try and help people, rather than gain from them... but goddamn is that a stupid move. The other schools probably wouldn't take him, and those were the only choices left.

you're joking, right? Do you seriously think that the UT D WON'T get to Bomar with that DII line?? Good job though, you made me laugh today.

I was joking. Look for my thread about espn.com bowl predictions. He said UT would be undefeated or a 1 loss team. I told him they wouldnt and asked him to put a wager. He backed out of a cash wager and wanted to do some pansy sig bet.

back to Bomar, was he turned down by TCU? IF I were in his situation, and knew I'd likely sit out half a season to transfer to I-AA and try to get my situation resolved expeditiously, I'd just sit out a whole year for transferring to another I-A school, and try to get my situation resolved during that year. Then I could start the WHOLE next season at TCU or somewhere comparable. My only guess for his choice is that he had been turned down by these other schools. I mean, SWT was a game away from playing for a Nat'l Championship, lost their senior QB, and their coach passed on Bomar as well.

Patterson expressed interest in Bomar & Quinn until the media storm hit, he decided it wasn't worth the hassle. I know he had "interviews" with Houston & Illinois, but I guess nothing panned out.
