Hi all,
As some of you know, I just bought an 06 GT. It comes with a Shaker 500 system, but I'm hoping to replace the head unit. I'm thinking about building a car PC (I'm a geek afterall) but I'm going to look into aftermarket head units first.
The main thing I'm looking for in a unit is one that will allow me to store my video ipod in the glove box and have full control of it from the head unit or from a remote. Secondary wants include Navigation and Video DVD playback. Video playback from the ipod would be awesome :D
Right now I want to keep the head unit purchase price below $500 but if you can tell me about a "dream system" please do. If something incredible catches my attention, then I'll hold off and save for it.
Thanks in advance,
the beav ;)

You can get units with everything you mentioned, but a decent one will probably cost you $1500 or more. You can get a good unit under $1000 without navigation. $500 is probably not going to get you what you want.

I don't have any recommendations for you, because I am as new to this as you are (I am also working on a "carputer" project for my Jeep.)
But I think you should check out the forums at www.mp3car.com
That place has given me ALOT of help.
Thanks, I'm looking into that.

I have an Alpine IVA-W200 (head unit) and the Alpine PMD-B100 (Blackbird) for navigation. I also have an Alpine PXA-H701 (processor). I love this combo and would recommend it to people (like me) who are setting up a serious audio/video system in their ride, but it's overkill for 99% of people out there just looking for a head unit upgrade. If you want it all in one, I would look at some of the units by Kenwood, Eclipse, and Pioneer. I don't know all of the model numbers, but if you get on each company's site, you should be able to check out their latest stuff. Good luck!
I am not aware of an indash head unit that will control a VIDEO ipod unit and allow it to play video. However, You can control the audio files from many head units and I have had a few customers add an iPod connector that will allow you to play video through the head unit but you have to control it from the iPod. Many video units will allow you to have both an iPod controller and an aux input for video iPod that plugs into the bottom of the iPod and charges it as well.
I'll bet it will be available for the 2007 models.

but evedently mods. dont care for people to be too helpful.
No, the mods are tired of people trying to get away with posting ads. Any more post on the subject will be deleted, end of story.

Ive got a Jensen VM9021TS that does exactly what your looking for. Look on ebay. You can get them new for under 600 shipped. Its a double din unit. I added two cheapo 7" headrest monitors that I got new for 200 shipped for both also. It doesnt have navi built in but has a input for Jensen's nav100 box and sattelite radio. Ipod control works great. I have a 60gb video hooked up and it plays videos and everything. Touchscreen makes it pretty easy.
