1. Ohio State (35) 1,558
2. Notre Dame (10) 1,470
3. Texas (8) 1,411
4. Auburn (3) 1,395
5. West Virginia (6) 1,354
6. USC (3) 1,345
7. Florida 1,178
8. LSU 1,144
9. California 975
10. Oklahoma 960
11. Florida State 949
12. Miami (FL) 893
13. Louisville 844
14. Michigan 824
15. Georgia 743
16. Iowa 720
17. Virginia Tech 614
18. Clemson 479
19. Penn State 386
20. Nebraska 332
21. Oregon 324
22. TCU 257
23. Tennessee 215
24. Arizona State 215
25. Texas Tech 181

Others recieving votes: Alabama 141, Utah 52, Boston College 41, Georgia Tech 39, Boise State 23, Arkansas 18, Wisconsin 18, South Carolina 15, Tulsa 11, Texas A&M 10, UTEP 4, Brigham Young 4, Purdue 4, Iowa State 3, Northern Illinois 3, Ole Miss 3, Michigan State 2, Arizona 1

Naturally I have a problem with Notre Dame being #2 over Texas, but that will change after week 2 ;)

OU drops 5 spots vs. the USA Today poll

West Virginia and Louisville are still overranked. How West Virginia got more first place votes than Auburn is insane.

USC is still too high for losing that much talent on the offensive side of the ball.

I still think that Texas should be number one, number two AT LOWEST. What happened to all of these voters that were saying "you're #1 until you're beaten" last year? Don't give me any crap about VY, either, UT has a SOLID team coming back with 2 great QB prospects. ND is the ONLY team in the country I'd be okay with taking a backseat to right now. Ohio should be #3 after losing to Texas and then not having a D for this year. I guess we'll just have to see what happens and see if the ranking is legit.

I agree that Texas should be #1 until they get beat. They are not getting the same respect that USC got for 2 straight years.

Texas returns 14 starters from a National Championship team, plus they bring in the #5 overall recruiting class in the nation.

Ohio State loses their entire LB and DB corps as well as some key offensive guys, most notably WR - Santonio Holmes. Ted Ginn Jr. didn't do much last year, especially against Texas and with Holmes gone he's gonna get double teamed.

Notre Dame has an excellent offense returning, but their defense is horrible and they got exposed by Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. Notre Dame has to play 4 teams from the Big Ten and I think at least one will beat them, Michigan.

If Paul Pinegar wouldn't have thrown 4 INT's in the 2nd half against USC and won the game last year, they would have gotten some love.

Well you all have to admit you just lost the main focal point of the offense, neither of the current QB's is proven at this level. USC returned a Heisman QB and a Heisman Candidate. The idea of a team remaining #1 in the NCAA type format is not acceptable seeing that it's based off a points system versus a playoff system. UT lost points when they lost Vince, Ohio State was the National Title during the 02 season but at the beginning of the 03 season were ranked 2nd not 1st. OU was ranked ahead of them that year. There are plenty of National Championship teams that did not return to the #1 spot after an undefeated National Title run. So according to you all if UT should be ranked #1 then USC should be ranked #2 until everyone else beats them, correct?

Wrong.

Well if you choose to use logic I'd agree both teams lost the best QB's in the nation and both lost premier running backs so both will take a hit in the polls. So if #1 is to still be #1 even though a huge part of the offense has changed, then #2 should still equally reside in their respective place, as should #3 and #4 and so on.

Don't worry Geof I am not accusing you of using logic in your reasoning and I understand it is simply fanship that guides your opinion. :D

I'm talking about how when USC beat OU, they were #1 the following year.

Yes, VY is gone. However, they are returning 14 starters from the National Championship team and have a Heisman Candidate in Jamaal Charles.

Ohio St. is having to replace more quality players than Texas is and Notre Dame was beaten on more than one occasion last year.

It's not logic you dumbass. What did they teach you at Aggie Land? Obviously nothing. How is this for logic? If a team wins the national championship, shouldn't they carry the honor of being called the national champions (that's also known as "the best," or "number one") until they get beaten? And you don't worry either, because I know it's just your hatred of the Longhorns that guides your opinion.

Also, I wouldn't call myself a fan as I'm not really a fan of much college sports.

Okay assclown the pre-season is based on what the team looks like now not 8 months ago. Also number one right now is not fiction based bullshit as to who won last year with a different QB. So according to that then we should base the entire top 25 off of last years end of season rankings and # 2 should be #2 and #3 should be #3 right? I guess you are so ate up with "fanshit" or non-college fanshit you have no idea, otherwise why would you even be in the mix here. They are the 2005 National Champions and will always be, that doesn't make them the 2006 favorites when they lost VY, if he was still there I'd be shocked if they didn't go undefeated and make it back to the title game this year. If VY was still at UT I'd think it was BS to if they weren't #1 but that is not the case.

He can't understand it because his team has been relegated to struggling to beat Baylor and get to 6 wins in a season. National Champion isn't in the A&M football vocabulary.

There's no logic in preseason polls and there never has been.In 2004, Utah went undefeated and won the Fiesta bowl while finishing 4th in the nation.
The next year they weren't even in the top 25.Why? Because they lost their QB as the number one pick and their head coach bolted for Florida.
Obviously, they don't have the talent base to recruit from as UT but the poll is pure speculation.
Its as worthless as the Cowboys preseason record. It will start to shake out fairly soon.

I'll say that they could be done better, but they do have value because you can at least make an educated guess on how a team will do when they have a large amount of returing players and had a good record in the previous season.

Of course Auburn is the most recent exception to the rule, but they had a very weak non-conference schedule that hurt them just as much as starting so far back in the polls.

So do you really think UT is going to go undefeated again this year. I am asking for an educated guess based off logic, no name calling and I won't hold it against you. I see them dropping 1 or 2 games and being a top 6 team at years end, heck maybe even end up in the top 2-4 again. So without being blinded by orange what do you think this season will look like?
