I have an Alpine CDA-7894 receiver in my truck and want to add XM radio to it. It is an XM ready radio, but they no longer make the XM Receiver (TUA-T020XM). My question is, will an XM Direct XMDALP100 by Terk and XMD1000 work the same as the Alpine receiver they used to make? Also on antenna placement, I really have no way to mount this antenna on the roof without drilling holes. Have you seen an XM unit work good with the antenna mounted at the top of the dash? Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks,
Ryan

As far as the antenna on the roof without holes. What kind of car do you have? I had my Roady loose for a while with the antenna sliding around on the dash and reception is OK. Had it on my SuperCrew and on a long trip to Alabama the tall trees on the side of the highway would block out reception. I haven't had any issues since it's been magnetically mounted to the roof of my SuperCrew with a few trips through some back roads East Texas country roads with tall trees.

Should always be a way to run the antenna outside. If it is a truck there may be vents on the back wall that you can run the wire through and in the weather stripping.

Yes, the terk stuff will work fine.
Do you have a third brake light on the roof? That is where we run most antennas.
You can put the antenna on the dash but you may experience poor reception.

the standard xm antena is magnetic... so... it should stay... you would be supprised at how strong that little bastard is...

It won't stay on the roof of a RamSRT/10 at over 100mph. I have the scratches on my roof to prove it. Now it is on the dash.

Through the glass, no hole: TRK-SR1. As far as I know, that antenna hasn't been manufactured for some time, but a Google and/or ebay search will direct you. We have had them on our cars for years. The concern being the antenna sliding off at high speed as well as it causing a problem with even paint color shift over time (i.e. take the antenna off when selling/trading car with a "color footprint" from the antenna).
I am unsure of the underlying reasons why they are no longer available from Audiovox/Terk. They are a bit (a lot) larger and less then attractive but avoiding the wiring conflict and paint scratching/coloring concerns, there is some argument in favor of the "fugly" antenna...
