New windows xp genuine validation update

Well F-me

I have a machine that I got from Mi Cocina when we pulled some old equipment out. It was installed by their old IT guy with a Windows XP SP2 Volume License Product Key.

I actually have a copy of the media with the product key it's the Microsoft Licensing green cd and all.

Now they are telling me I have a bad copy of XP. Mother bitches. I guess they are really getting good at protecting against piracy. Hell you can't even uninstall the update.

Just an FYI, I guess I'll have to purchase my MCSE Action Pack sooner than I wanted. :(

But 350 bucks for 10 licenses of XP, Office XP, Server 2003, Small Business 2003, and a ton of other software is worth it I guess

It will still update if you leave Automatic updates on and let them install themselves. You just can't do them on demand.

it's more than that, i can't "fix" windows media player 10 problems i'm having, because I can't download and reinstall. I've been running IE 7 beta, and I can't get the fixes for it in the Beta 3, etc...

Just sucks

I've hated Microsofts licenesing for a LONG time. Not being able to get updates is a big hinderence to any box. I remember at a previous job ( not mentioning names ;p ) none of our boxes were updatable ( like most small businesses ;) ) and we depended on 'smart' browsing techniques, and firewalls to prevent our internal boxes from getting pwnd from external computers. One day, a client comes in with his laptop and had got more STD's than a Houston school with a 90% hispanic student population. The accountant chicks computer started having a timer counting down till reboot and she lost all sorts of crazy data. Then the shit storm happend. Mass emails, sql worms, all sorts of nasty shit started spreading through our data center eating up all our available bandwidth. It was a HUGE mess. Boss man wouldnt fix the problem with 'legit' windows, so we had to manually download all the patches from the website. Talk about a huge ordeal each "Patch Adams Tuesday". Since then we setup a secluded network to prevent a clients computer from fucking up everything again. Live and learn, glad I dont work there any more ;p

Did you try a system restore from an earlier date than the update? I've fixed a couple machines like that before.

If only it was that simple, i can't find a volume license product key that my machine will accept.

looks like Microsoft released a hotfix to remove the WGA Validation, "in case of problems"

imagine that

<3 my nLitened SP1 install. No updates post SP1. No worries about WGA, and how reportedly MS can remotely disable Windows without WGA installed/running (since you have to have SP2 for that to even be feasible)

which is great for getting updates, but not what i'm needing.

I did a little research, and it looks like my copy of the Volume License software I have is strictly for upgrades. So They must have loaded this computer with XP directly instead of upgrading from 2000. I might just go that route, and see what happens.
