Been hearing this on the radio on and off since Saturday's Game 6 victory over Phoenix. If you are old enough to remember the 1988 squad that made it to the Western Conference Finals, do you think they are better or worse than the current squad? The 88 squad was pretty special IMO with Aguire, Blackman, Harper, Perkins, and Donaldson with Tarpley coming off the bench. But I think the current squad is deeper and has a better superstar in Dirk.

Discuss.

They couldn't play with the Dallas team of now. If they were better then we would have a championship already here in Dallas.

Will you gotta understand that in 1988 we went 7 games with the Showtime Lakers. That is like a top 3 Squad of all time IMO. If we had to play a lesser team we would have taken it for sure that year.

True but we had to go through the Spurs.

The 88 team was very good.If Harper wouldn't have had a brain fart and tried to dribble out the clock against the Laker's, they may have gone all the way that year.

True but we had to go through the Spurs. The "showtime" lakers were in the finals between 1980-90 9 TIMES. They are one of the greatest teams ever!

Too young, but I say this team is better because we have a huge German guy.

On a side note: In 7th grade Derek Harper's son Darius (8th grade at the time, about 5'9") dunked on me when we played his school in basketball. :o

I think this team is more gifted but the 88 squad would wear this team down with the way they played. they pushed their will in ever game they played that year but it is hard to beat a team like the lakers had.

Good point!But we DID. ;) :D

It's all just a mind-fuck anyway, no one will ever know. But I'm sure Dan Marino would rather have a Super Bowl ring than be remembered for being "almost good enough." ;) And then there's the Buffalo Bills... (sorry for the football analogies)

The current Mavs would own the 88 Mavs, simply because of depth. When you have a deep, talented team, you always have fresher legs than the other team. Trapley off the bench couldnt hold Stack's jock. The Mavs are built to play any style of ball and the offense is built around the best pure jump shooter in the league.

i say the current mavs would beat the showtime lakers. but basketball has evolved, so the comparision is not fair.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - James Worthy - Magic Johnson - Byron Scott - Mike McGee - Michael Cooper - Bob McAdoo - Larry Spriggs - Kurt Rambis - Jamaal Wilkes - Mitch Kupchak - Ronnie Lester - Chuck Nevitt - Earl Jones

Mavs 06 vs 98 bulls?!?

Our current team would own the '88 squad. I think Ro Blackman and Harper would be the first to admit that.

GO MAVS!!!

Basketball, sports in general, has evolved over the years. The '06 Mavs are a much more physical/strong team and would beat the Mavs of old.

I dunno, but I'd be willing to bet that Avery would out coach Dick Motta.
