View Full Version : does Rush suck?

They seem to be a love 'em or hate 'em kind of band. I had a friend who loved them to death, so much so that he convinced me to go see them in concert a decade ago. I still hate them. A lot.

Favorite band of all time.
There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples
And they're quite convinced they're right
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade
There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
"The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light!"
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw

Rush rocks....but I like Tool too. What to vote?
...I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime
Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside
so bad or way bad?
totally bad, like for sure...

That's when they started getting into the Synthesizer. Right after Moving Pictures.
Signals is still really good, all of their albums are, some are just easier to listen to than others. They started really picking up again when they released Counterparts though - everything since then has been solid.

Seriously, you may not like Rush, but, IMO, there has not been a band in the last 15 years to have that kind of talent or make that kind of music. They are lyrical masterminds and have class, unlike 90% of other rock bands. Saying you don't like Rush just about makes you ignore the influences of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Who. By the way, I love Pantera. If you've ever heard of Vinnie Paul, you should know that his inspiration on the drums was Neil Peart. If that name doesn't ring a bell, you might want to consider Green Day, Third Eye Blind and Blink 182.
Listen to Limelight, Freewill, and Tom Sawyer, I think you will realize their talent. They are a 3-man bands that puts out more sounds than the Gypsy Kings.

I can't remember when they got away from Terry Brown co producing, but somewhere along the way that's when their sound started changing up.

Rush rocked back in the day when they peaked in the early 80's. Metallica peaked in the late 80's, and I bet everybody will think they suck in a couple of years (if not already).
I don't think you can appreciate any band if you weren't on the scene when they rocked. Songs like Red barcheta, YYZ, and Working man make me want to hit the air drums everytime I hear them.

LMAO at the all the people saying, "but the drummer is really good" or even better, "You have to be a bass player to fully appreciate them". I don't care who's playing the instruments if Tiny Tim is the front man, the band is gonna suck. End of story.

YYZ is byfar one of my favorite songs, the whole Hemispheres album is probably my favorite album if not tied with 2112. This was my first concert (2112) at the Ft Worth C.C I went by myself, since the Dallas show was sold out, it left an impression on me that has made me a loyal fan, I've only missed one show since then (Roll the Bones tour) they always come to Dallas in Feb. for some odd reason...'H'
The past two times they have come have been in June - once on my Birthday, once two days after my birthday.

Jeez.... the "fucking singer" is Geddy Lee.
Music is subjective and we all like different stuff. But Rush was huge back in the day. Have some respect :D

Hey, cut him a little slack.... he can play bass, sing, and play keyboards with his feet all at the same time !

If you would have waited 2 and a half more months this would have been a solid 3 year old resurrection.

Which perfectly illustrates why they suck. If you have to be a musician to get it, they have a name for that: Jazz. Which also sucks.

I'm by no means a musician or an audiophile but I've always dug Rush.

Yeah, we got that from a couple posts you made years ago. Old news.
Rush sucks. Tool is better.

Music is made, and whoever chooses to listen to it, does so on their own accord. Somebody who loves hip-hop might think that Snoop Dog is a fucking genius. I personally don't, but then again. I don't like hip hop. Opinions and assholes.
So enjoy your Nickelback...
...and suck it.

I like some jazz. I'm not a big fan of piano jazz, but if someone is wailing away on the trumpet with a badass upright bass and a good drummer leading the way, i'm digging it.

I can play a shitload of instruments and I can say, in all honesty, Rush can suck a salty fart outta my ass!
Seriously, someone sew some cock and balls on Geddy Lee and you might have something!

I'll tolerate a couple of the songs they made, but for the most part I say they suck. Maybe not Hoover level suckage, but at least drinking straw-in-a-thick-milkshake suckage.

There's more musical talent per member in Rush than in just about any other band in the world. Geddy's vocals may not be to your liking, but the musical talent oozing out of that band is almost hysterical. The vocals aren't that bad, you just sound like a bunch of whiney babies.
Give La Villa Strangiato a listen. That's the pinnacle of rock music excellence.

They seem to be a love 'em or hate 'em kind of band. I had a friend who loved them to death, so much so that he convinced me to go see them in concert a decade ago. I still hate them. A lot.
fuck! I thought this was about rush limbaugh.

Yeah, they are not bad if you actually like the sound Peewee Herman would make if his balls were in a blender.
