There is a sticker on the tank of my '02 gsxr 750 that says 91 octane minimum. I just put 89 in.

i go back and forth between 89 and 93. Not sure what my bike calls for, but i seriously doubt its 87.

The motors are so efficient you can run 87 in them.

What does octane have to do with efficiency?

I've run 87, 89,91, 93.....I never could tell any difference on my V45, 600 F3, or my Blackbird. I just run 87.

I run 87 in the Busa. No need to buy 89 or 93 if the bike does not need it. Most bikes will make more power with the lower octane or what the minimun requires. I see people all the time putting 93 in all types of vehicles that do not need it, waste of money and lots carbon buildup in the combustion area. Just like when some people go to the strip and put race fuel in a car that doesnt need it.

I bet the oil companies are making the auto makers say it needs 91 octane or higher. lol

most of the time it just has to do with how agressive the tune is ..

i read somewhere that the lower octane you can run without detonation = more power. I run midgrade in my bike for peice of mind, but can't ever tell a difference from that to premium.

there's a big debate on the kawiforums about it, but i'm waaaay too lazy to go find a link. :)

As was stated above, lower octane makes for easier combustion. Pure heptane is far too volatile for engines to run exclusively, so octane is introduced to make the gas harder to burn. This makes the combustion cycle more controllable. All of this is done to prevent knocking or detonation. Another thing you might consider is heat soaking. Heat soaked engines are far more likely to detonate, so running a higher octane during the summer might be a good idea. Unlike cars, motorcycles are not equipped with knock sensors to dial back ignition advance; which means there is nothing except the octane to protect your engine from serious damage.

I remember a while back ARH said the race fuel he ran in his bikes when he raced was 87 octane.

my 05 gixxer also calls for 87, i have ran both 87 and 93 and i get better gas millage on 87, i guess its all in how the motor is tuned

most of the bikes that are over 1000 cc's, haybusa, blackbird, zx12 are all around 10-1 compression so couple that with the camshaft timing you probably will never make one rattle. All the 600's , 750's, and 1000's are at a minimum of 12-1, but yet again with the cam timing they don't rattle on regular if they are stock. However, you should take a look at the valve seats of a streetbike head that has run nothing but pump gas when they send them to us for a valve job

You guys ought to add some lead in there somwhere cause the oxygenated crap sold in the dfw area eats vavle seats.
