View Full Version : Well, I've been doing the math....

I'm moving out to Grapevine next month, and I've been doing the math trying to figure out a way to offset the fuel cost of a long commute.
My first thought was to get a good single cylinder bike or a small twin that get 50+ mpg. But thats not looking like the best option right now. After doing the math, I would be saving right at $1200 per year by riding a bike everyday(and we all know that isn't going to happen). With rain and cold weather, there's going to be about 2-3 months that I'm NOT going to be riding. So that $1200 per year savings has dropped to about $800-$900 per year.

Now, if I took that same money that I was going to use for a bike and used it to pay off some bills, not having those monthly payment would save me about $200 per month! That equals out to $2400 per year in savings.

My whole intention with buying a bike was to save some money on the day to day expenses. And it's looking like the bike isn't going to save me very much at all.

Hmmmmmm decisions decisions.....

I see what ya mean. I have my bike for pleasure so I don't mind spending the extra money on the payment/insurance because I already had that built into the budget. Getting to use it for great gas mileage is just an added bonus for me. But, if money were tight, I would be in the same boat as you. I'd just have to deal with 15 mpg... But fuck it anyways, get a bike :D

Money really isn't "tight" too much. I'm just a cheap ass old bastard that doesn't like to spend money on gas :D Exspecially when the oil companies are making record profits!

That was my first choice! :D
Retail is $6200, so it's not too bad. But I found a 01 DRZ400 for $2500. Then get a set of supermoto wheels from Sum of all parts for about $1000 and a set of tires.......could have the same thing for about $4k :D The only thing you would be lacking would be a set of forks. But they use the RM250 forks on that DRZ400SM. So a used set of those shouldn't be too much.

People think I'm crazy but I want to sell my GSXR 1000 to get a DRZ400 SM. I've heard supermotos are the most fun you can have while riding.

thats why i never saw the logic in all these people that went out and spent $8,000 on a new bike because gas went up. for me, the savings in gas will pretty much pay for the insurance.

2 motorcycles > 1 motorcycle :D

I know that thought... :D

Yeah...I couldnt justify the retarded prices of most new bikes....thats why I bought a used Blackbird for 5 grand. All in all just for the fun factor I would say it was probably one of the best things I've ever spent 5 grand on :D

As for the gas savings justifying the bike...that was never really an issue with me. I enjoy riding.....its kind of like therapy.
