Are they like the F-bods to where you can throw a good efficient high stall TC in there and make some good times and 60fts?

They are great for performace with the right mods. THey have huge clutches and are easily upgradable to hi-po applications.

What would be the life expectancy for basic bolt-ons and a good torque converter? Or do they need to be built up quickly? Do they need re-programming to run good with basic bolt-ons, or just a shift kit?

Is the 4R70W what comes in the 99+ GTs?

Yes. Stock the 02+ I think are built the best. I currently am putting 365 to my completely stock one...it is fine, but runs real hot and it is probably due to TC slip.

Basic bolt ons...just get a trans cooler and you'll be good to go. Also, a tune to ...tune the electronic shifting...OR do the JMODs.

I like'd my '01, never gave me any static after many launches on dr's. Just had basic bolt on's ran 8.70 consistently wouldn't '60 worth a shit though so if your considering one definatly ditch the stock converter.

97 and newer have all the updates. Tranny cooler and a good converter like a PI Stallion or art carr is a good start, mod the valve body and gain control over the shift points, and the 4r70w's can handle a good amount of power and live long time as long as you keep the fluid clean and cool. MerconV is the only fluid you should use. Anything else will kill it. Stay far away from the transgo shift kit. There are a number of stand alone tranny controllers on the market if you want full control of converter lockup, line pressure, and shift points.

what's wrong with the shift kit? I'm probably going to get an aftermarket VB anyways, but just curious.

The transgo kit trys to controls the 4r70w with line pressure like an old style trans shift kit instead of working with the electronic solenoids to adjust the shift points and firmness. This causes the tranny to self destruct prematurely.

To expand on this a little - which is an accurate reading.

There are 3 ways to control shift points, pressures...

-JMod(s)
-Electronically via chip/handheld tuner
-Shift Kit

They are listed in order of preference. For anyone seriously trying to learn a little about these trans, here is some reading for you...

http://tccoa.com/articles/tranny/index.html

It is a little dry, but it'll explain why shift kits are not preferred. "Jerry" works for SCT now I think and was part of the engineering of the trans. I think it is modulardepot or modularfords he used to post under SCT GUY or SCT_GUY...something like that...he would chime in under some of the trans posts. Good reading. I put a little more stock in his information, but still....take it how you want.

Regardless, a cooler and converter is all you need for a newer 4r70w...if you only have bolt-ons.

Good luck,

If you get a 5-speed and want an auto...I might swap ya. :) I might even buy you a TC for it.

It's back. I guess it didn't sell. I'm going to go test drive it. I don't think I'll trade, I know how much a TC can wake a car up. :D
