I have a hp pavillion that I have had for about 3 years. Everytime I put in a cd to either read or burn the computer locks up. Usually when I first put in a cd, you can hear is spin up to speed. That is not happening, the light just keeps blinking. I tried to burn a cd and it finally spun up , but would not do anything. Locked up the computer with it still spinning and had to do a manual shut down. I went to hp help and it said updates are available but it is unable to complete download. So it shuts down (not the computer) How can I trouble shoot this? TIA :)

Not sure. Hell, it won't hurt to upgrade. You can get a cdrw/dvdrw combo drive on newegg for ~$45

I stuck in a audio cd. (toadies) and it fired up. But all the ones I have previously burned it will not go in to the auto run mode. If I go to my computer and double click on the disc icon, it will not open it. Just freaking sets there with the blinking light.

I put a new writable in, had to go thru 4 of them before it would recognize it as a disc being inserted. I burned some pics, tried to open them and it would not. Brought it to work and they are on the disc. Any thoughts?

Ok, I am leaning towards doing that. Help a brother out. Install? Pull the casing off, unplug and pull existing. Install new and run cd for final install? Never done it before.

1. Makes sure the disks are clean.
2. Try and drive cleaner to clean the drive laser thingy.

Any HP I've had wasn't compatible with plug-in upgrades. It's been w hile since I've had one, so maybe it's changed.
